Fordsburg: Joburg's "Little India"
Fordsburg is affectionately known as the city's "Little India." It's history dates back to the late 1880s when it was not much more than repurposed farmland. Fordsburg's history is somewhat marked by periods of violent unrest and upheaval. This does not define the area, however.
For the most part, Fordsburg has maintained its identity as a multicultural suburb, offering working class people of all backgrounds a place to call home.
A large majority of residents own businesses in the area, many of which are situated at the iconic Oriental Plaza. The Fordsburg community has rallied itself around these businesses to come out on the other side even stronger. You can help keep the suburb alive and thriving by visiting their business district, restaurants and monuments.
