Coffee lovers unite. Because, as we know, there’s nothing quite like starting (or ending for that matter) the day with a good cuppa, and in Joburg we’re definitely spoilt for choice. Whether you prefer Seattle, Vida, Bootlegger or Plato, there’s a cuppa for everyone, and even a baby chino for the kiddies. But which of these is truly the cream of the crop and why? We’ve got the caffeinated low-down for you so keep reading.
A Little Backstory
Although Seattle Coffee Company shares its name with a city in the USA, it was originally founded in the UK in 1993. Its first store opened in Cape Town in 1997, and it has since spread nationwide. It has partnered with Caltex/Astron Energy, so while you fuel your car, you can also fuel yourself. Plato, Vida, and Bootlegger all originated right here in Mzanzi. While Plato started out of a single shipping container in Irene, Vida and Bootlegger’s origin stories start in Cape Town but all three have since spread countrywide with up to 100 locations.
So What’s On Offer?
Each of these coffee chains has established itself with its unique brand and style. For example, Seattle is known for their signature blue and white cups, cosy couches or ample seating for remote working. Bootlegger stands out for its all-day menu, AC/DC neon lyrics on each location’s wall, and its black and brass interior. Vida recognised for its street café vibes and light snacks, and finally, Plato is known for its all-white aesthetics and tagline: coffee sculpted, community included. But the golden thread between all four? Fantastic coffee, of course!
A Little More About The Coffee
Vida literally offers you a galaxy of flavours since all their coffee blends are named after constellations. For example, there’s the Electra blend. Electra means “to shine brightly” and was named after one of the seven stars in the Taurus constellation. Bootlegger’s commitment to good coffee starts with the beans. They sustainably source Rainforest Alliance Certified beans from renowned coffee-growing regions and boast one of the biggest micro roasters in South Africa.
Plato owns its own roastery that ships beans to all its locations countrywide. This means that no matter which Plato you visit, the quality of the coffee will always be the same and consistent. Seattle Coffee Company’s beans are also all locally roasted at their roastery in Muizenberg, and you can even buy a bag with your next cuppa in store.
And The Menus?
Bootlegger is definitely the place to go if you’re starting to feel hangry. They have an all-day breakfast menu, and the rest of their menu is served from 12 pm. Enjoy signature dishes like their eggboxes, the BootEgger breakfast or a variety of burgers. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a quick snack, then Vida has a range of wraps, filled croissants and toasties. Seattle’s baked offerings differ from location to location but generally they have a selection of muffins, quiches and bagels on offer.
Most of Seattle’s baked goods are halaal, but if a menu item contains pork, it will be clearly labelled for your convenience. Last, but certainly not least, is Plato. Although their focus is mainly on their artisanal coffee, they do offer a limited range of pastries and sweet treats. So, if your sweet tooth is calling, then head over to your nearest Plato for some fudge, a custard cube or maybe even a cruffin.
Rewarding Loyalty
Yip, that’s right. All four of these coffee chains reward their customers for their loyalty. It truly does pay to keep going back for more. But how exactly is royalty rewarded? While some loyalty programmes can be tricky to navigate and/or require a loyalty card, Seattle makes it seamless. All you need is your cell phone number. Every time you buy your favourite beverage, simply punch in your cell phone number. Accumulate 10 and your eleventh beverage is free. And the best part? You can choose any drink for your free drink. Similar to this, Bootlegger also offers a free drink after collecting 10 digital stamps in their loyalty programme.
Vida offers a loyalty programme where you earn in Rand amounts, which you can then use to buy your next caffeine fix. You can also swipe your loyalty card at participating Shell petrol stations. Lastly, Plato’s loyalty programme offers you 5% cash back on your purchases. See? It really does pay to be loyal, and you get great coffee to boot (or is that Bootlegger?).
Next time you’re in dire need of a caffeine fix, maybe a light snack or some breakfast. Look no further than Bootlegger, Plato, Seattle or Vida. There’s guaranteed to be one near you.
