Sustainable Fashion Brands To Watch Out For In 2020

Joburg Admin / December 18, 2019

Woolworths

Woolworths introduced their sustainable fashion range back in 2016. Committing to partnering with the Better Cotton Initiative, Woolies fashion have promised to have at least one sustainable attribute for all their directly sourced products by 2020. Across their range of products, Woolworths also aim to advocate for ethical farming, trade and labour practice. In 2017, they converted at least 15% of their cotton to BCI, using only eco-friendly chemical to dye their fabrics. The Better Cotton range is available at most Woolies clothing stores. Zara

In July 2019, high street fashion brand Zara announced that they would be joining the sustainable fashion initiative. Aiming to increase their environmentally-friendly fashion output to 80% by 2025, Zara is blazing the trail for international fashion brands in South Africa. In 2020, you can expect a greater range of recycled cotton products, as well as restrictions on single-use plastic. To combat this, Zara will be reusing recycled cardboard shipping boxes up to six times, using recycled plastics internally and the company has started working on a way to re-circulate clothes hangers. Customers will be offered brown paper bags as an alternative, too. Click here for more information. sustainable fashion

The Joinery

The Joinery is a sustainable and ethical product design brand based in Cape Town. While more of a luxury accessories brand than a fashion house, The Joinery's collection of tote bags, holders for sunglasses and travel gear is super trendy and eco-friendly. Their products are made from recycled plastic bottles, helping to eliminate the extent of plastic in our oceans and landfills. The Joinery delivers nationwide, so you can spoil yourself with a cute customised tote bag for shopping or a wine tote to take on picnics. There is a handy children's tote available at their online store too, so your little ones can carry their books or toys in style while helping the environment. Click here for more information.

Spirit Girl Eco-Activewear

Another Cape-based eco-friendly fashion brand is Spirit Girl Eco-Activewear. Pioneered by two women with a passion for conservation, the surf and sun, Spirit Girl offers custom designed, eco-friendly, locally and ethically made apparel. Their funky yoga pants, swimsuits and tank tops are made from recycled plastic bottles, woven with spandex to give you full support and comfort. We love their mermaid-inspired yoga bottoms, with shiny blue scale design. With 4-way stretch and UV50 protection, these pants will keep you cool and dry, whether worn to the beach or to that early morning yoga class. 10% of profits from these pants are donated to Ocean Conservation, so you can feel like a mermaid and do good too. Fundudzi

Fundudzi by Craig Jacobs operates on the mantra that the clothing you wear should be an extension of your conscience. Their approach to sustainability is deeply rooted in Africa, sourcing all their materials on the continent from ethical sources. Their bespoke tailored suits for men feature bold prints inspired by nature, while their casual garments combine traditional shweshwe print with clean cut lines. This eco-brand has been changing the fashion game since 2004 with their forward thinking, so you can trust them to provide you with conscious fashion choices. Click here for more information.

Sitting Pretty

If you love loose-fitting, tailored clothes made from sustainable fabrics, then Sitting Pretty is the brand for you. This Cape Town eco-friendly fashion store uses zero synthetics in their clothing, only organic cottons and hemps. With a sophisticated urban feel to their range, their fashion pieces are well worth investing in, as these fabrics are made to last. Give your look a contemporary urban update by purchasing one of their casual dresses, tops or overcoats. Click here for more information.

WWF SA

Finally, we have the World Wide Fund for Nature South Africa. Formed in 1968, this non-profit initiative dedicates themselves to promoting a cleaner, greener future for all. Their online store is filled with eco-friendly t-shirts for men, women and kiddies, as well as cute accessories and reusable essentials. Our top pick is the "I Speak Panda" 100% cotton t-shirt. Featuring the iconic WWF SA logo, this shirt is made from 100% African cotton and is produced in Cape Town. Show your support for sustainable fashion by proudly wearing the panda in 2020.
