The
FireRoom at Montecasino is a sushi and grill experience that has to be savoured slowly. From the welcome, to the top-notch service through to the unique sushi experience that awaits you. Speaking of service, we found it attentive and personal – the kind you usually only receive when you're a frequent guest. Our waitron, Themba, was warm and friendly. He even brought various craft gin bottles to the table so we could select something we hadn’t tried before.
Before I get into the sushi part of the evening, let me point out that non-sushi lovers have a wide variety of dishes to choose from as well. These include a fillet on the bone (pepper-crusted and flamed-grilled at the table), Yakitori Chicken Skewers, dim sum, shellfish, Poké Bowls, soup, salads and battered fish and chips.
Flaming Good Sushi
But oh, the
sushi. We asked Themba to suggest dishes we should try, and having shown us various photos on his tablet, he suggested these four:
- Tiger vs Dragon (four Sweet Tiger Rolls – tempura prawn rainbow roll, avo, cream cheese, Kewpie mayo, cranberry and biscuit crumbs, and four Dragon Rolls – marinated Scottish salmon rainbow roll, tempura prawn, feta, avo and yakitori sauce)
- Berry Roses (four salmon roses, thick crème fraîche and a berry reduction)
- Tuna Crunch (eight tempura tuna California rolls, cream cheese, crispy rice and fantasy sauce) – the sauce is blow-torched at the table!
- Fire Roll (eight crispy California rolls, salmon, jalapeño, Kewpie mayo, cream cheese and yakitori sauce) – the sauce is poured over the sushi at the table, before being flambéd.
The table theatrics form part of the whole experience. But, don’t be fooled – the food stands out on its own. Two of my guests mentioned that it was the finest fusion sushi they had ever eaten. In fact, we were all scraping the remains of the sauce and crumbs onto a fork because everything tasted so good! Those preferring more traditional sushi will not be disappointed either. A large part of the menu is dedicated to maki rolls, nigiri, sashimi and more.
After Dinner Treats
We just did not have space for dessert. But, were VERY tempted by the Bar One Sliders (deep-fried Bar One nuggets, caramel and strawberry sorbet), Fiery Pear (candy-poached pear, puff pastry, vanilla cream) and Signature Milkshake Jug (strawberry milkshake jug, marshmallow pillows, chocolate, pine nuts and gummy sweets). Next time!
Needless to say,
this is a venue that has earned a place on my list of Holy Grail restaurants. My suggestion is to arrive hungry, take your time, ask the waiters for their suggestions. Be open to trying a phenomenal food experience that I have no doubt will be one to remember!
Average prices – as an idea, our meal came to around R900 (including a tip) for three adults and one child. This included the four plates of sushi mentioned above, two G&Ts, four soft drinks and a bottle of water for the table.
