Sun International casinos open for business during coronavirus outbreak

Joburg Admin / March 20, 2020

The group have had to cancel all events and shows in light of the crisis, but say that the roulette wheels will continue to spin.

In times like these, with money being tight and no live sport to bet on, one might find themselves tempted to head to the casino for a couple of spins at the roulette table.

Hotel, casino and entertainment group Sun international announced on Friday 20 March that they would be suspending all of its upcoming shows and events, but said that their casinos remain open for business.

The group also had to close down its operations in Latin America, with the latest closure in Chile due to the coronavirus spread.

“The measures taken are in accordance with the instructions of the pertinent authorities, in order to ensure the containment of the spread of the virus,” Sun international said in a statement.

“The authorities will continue to monitor the situation to determine when we will be permitted to reopen. Regarding the duration of the closures, it is not possible at this stage to determine their effect.”

Rolling the dice with your health?

Casinos can be dark and dingy at the best of times, and they might not present themselves as the most pleasent place to spend your time under the current circumstances, but the group insist that they are taking every precaution to keep punters safe.

Sun International say they have put in place measures to keep its premises hygienic, enhanced cleaning of high touchpoint areas like door handles, escalator handrails, slot machines, casino tables, elevator buttons and card machines.

“Our tables will be limited to a maximum of four players per table, with extra seats being removed, while upcoming casino draws, promotions and tournaments have been cancelled until further notice,” said a Sun International statement.

Bar’s closed pal

They will also comply with the crackdown on liquor consumption during the outbreak announced by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Wednesday.

“In line with new liquor regulations gazetted on 18 March, we will stop selling or offering alcohol at any of our casinos, bars and restaurants with immediate effect.”

At their various in-house restaurants, they will implement reduced seating capacity and host a maximum of 100 people, in line with the order President Cyril Ramaphosa made when he placed the country under a state of disaster nearly a week ago.

“We are also reducing the seating capacity at our dining areas to maintain a sensible distance between tables, and to limit the number of diners in each area to a maximum of 100.”
