For most Joburg residents, February means a mix of late-summer heat and refreshing thunderstorms that cool things down. The streets also come alive, as thousands flock to vibrant art exhibitions and Valentine-themed markets. But for a handful of online game enthusiasts, the month also delivered one of the most memorable surprises.
Despite being the shortest month of the year, February saw four players from Joburg strike gold. While the city buzzed outside with its usual festivities, these lucky individuals won life-changing prizes on the 10bet gaming platform, with payouts reportedly ranging from about R62,000 to more than R250,000.
According to a brand representative, the wins happened across three different jackpot titles. "It was an exciting month for Johannesburg players. Multiple jackpots were won in a relatively short period, and it feels even better to know that actual people from Joburg triggered these," said the same spokesperson.
Every February in Joburg is memorable with all the parties and social events. But for these four players, it'll be a month to remember for something else entirely: hitting it big during a regular online gaming session.
What Makes Progressive Jackpots So Popular?
There's something uniquely electrifying about online games with constantly climbing prizes, and the reason isn't hard to explain. A percentage of each bet goes directly into the prize pool, which keeps growing until someone wins. When that happens, the jackpot resets to a baseline amount and starts climbing again. No strategies, no experience required. As one 10bet spokesperson put it: "If you're lucky, even an R5 spin can trigger the jackpot."
That simplicity is a big part of the appeal. Progressive jackpots are the digital equivalent of the National Lottery, but accessible anytime, anywhere. "Whether you're commuting on the Gautrain, relaxing at home, or just walking around the Rosebank mall, literally anyone could win. And players like that idea a lot," said a 10bet spokesperson.
February: The Month of an Unforgettable Winning Streak
For 10bet players, February will undoubtedly go down as the highlight of the summer. The short month saw not one, but four individuals trigger the platform's progressive jackpot system, walking away with payouts reported to range from R62,000 to R250,000.
What makes these success stories even wilder is the sheer unpredictability of who can strike gold. The lucky group involved a diverse mix of players, with the first win going to a 34-year-old logistics manager from Randburg, who had reportedly just started a very casual gaming session after coming home from a long day of work.
"I couldn't believe it at first. I was exhausted when I came home from work, but when I saw those numbers on my phone's screen, I started jumping around the house from joy," said the 34-year-old.
Just days after news of the massive payout began circulating among jackpot hunters, a second winner emerged. This time, the jackpot was claimed by a 29-year-old from Sandton, who was apparently "just trying to pass the time while waiting for a friend" in a small Rosebank café.
Another win followed about two weeks later, when a 42-year-old father of three and self-described jackpot enthusiast saw how much the pot had accumulated and decided to test his luck. According to a 10bet representative, this was also the biggest win of the month.
"No one had claimed the jackpot in almost two weeks, so this one exceeded R250,000," said 10bet's spokesperson. When the brand reached out, the 42-year-old from Roodepoort admitted to "shaking from excitement" and revealed that he's already planning to pay off his debt and renovate the entire home.
The massive R250,000+ prize was immediately followed by February's fourth win, completing the month's streak. And although this one didn't have the chance to rise as much as the previous jackpot, it was still more than R60,000.
"Seeing four jackpot wins in one city within such a short period is a bit odd, but it can happen," said 10bet's representative.
