Spilia Is A Greek Island Paradise in Bedfordview

Joburg Admin / December 17, 2021

With four rooms built in 2019, the luxury island style “resort” now boasts nine uniquely decorated rooms and resembles the streets of a white-washed Greek village. The coloured doors and cobble stone alleyways certainly give you a feeling of walking down the narrow streets of Mykonos. Spillia has a large swimming pool and the rustic thatched seating area at the end of the alleyway amplifies the island experience. The white solid stone built-in recliners built into the pool invite you to sunbathe overlooking the crystal clear water with a cocktail by your side. The tall trees surrounding the property adds to the island feel, while the well-stocked bar with music at the end of the pool gives you the vibey atmosphere one would expect to find on the party island.

Cave Suite Experience

I spent a night with my wife at Spilia and we got to experience this piece of suburban paradise for ourselves. Spilia means cave in Greek, and having stayed in luxury cave suites in Santorini, this island styled accommodation resembles the same caliber of luxury and sophistication.  Completing the experience was a fabulous lunch and an inviting breakfast the next morning after a peaceful nights’ sleep, right here in my neighbourhood. I’ve always maintained that a night away at an amazing place feels like a week of R&R, where time stands still. And this is how we felt the next morning.

Types of Accommodation

You have a choice of two types of room - a luxury room or self-catering suite. All have king-sized beds and one has two single beds. The two suites and two luxury rooms can accommodate families with interleading doors between them.  All rooms have a microwave oven, coffee and tea making facilities, ironing boards and irons and hairdryers. Gowns and slippers are standard, as is DStv and all bespoke bathroom amenities. The mini bar fridge is stocked on request with water, mixers and alcoholic beverages, and is added to your account on consumption. The suites have a fully stocked kitchenette so catering your own meals is a breeze, just having to bring your own groceries. Guests have all day access to the pool and  free parking within a secure area with 24 hour security. Patric, the friendly and accommodating front of house manager is on call should you require any assistance as the property is unmanned at night.

Greek dining at its best

On the same property, you will find The Fat Mermaid Restaurant, with a curated Greek menu and food of the highest standard under the watchful eye of Chef Mania, whose years of food expertise ensures a culinary treat.  I highly recommend their famous Freddo Cappuccino, which Greeks have enjoyed for decades as a way to cool down while still enjoying coffee.  The Fat Mermaid is well known for beautiful breakfasts, lazy lunches, anytime snack or just a great cup of coffee early in the morning.  You’ll either stay at Spiliá for the luxury accommodation or the food – the jury is still out on that for me. I’m a real foodie so I’m going to recommend what we found delectable, that anyone visiting should try. The delish Dolmades; divine fishcakes and the heavenly deep fried panko crumbed Haloumi is a must. The warm delicious pita bread and two of my favourite dips – super fresh tzatziki and tasty humus are a treat.

Function venue

There are two distinct function areas and a beautiful 40 seater chapel. The pool function area seats up to 120 people and the conference room can handle 60 people. Each venue can be booked on their own with full catering for weddings, parties bridal showers or end of year functions. Exclusive use of the property is also possible.  R1200 per night for 2 people in a sumptuous room/suite.
