SASSA To Roll Out Biometric Enrolment For New Grant Applicants From September 2025

Joburg Admin / September 5, 2025

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that starting 1 September 2025, all new social grant applicants will need to undergo biometric enrolment as part of their application process. This change marks a significant step in strengthening the integrity of the grant system while tackling persistent challenges such as fraud, duplicate applications, and payments to inactive accounts.

Why Biometric Enrolment?

SASSA has been piloting biometric enrolment since April 2025, using fingerprint scans and facial recognition to securely link applicants to their grants. According to Acting CEO Brenton van Vrede, the system has shown promising results during testing and is now ready for full implementation.

The biometric enrolment is designed to:

  • Stop fraudulent applications and fake accounts.
  • Reduce losses from payments going to inactive or deceased beneficiaries.
  • Speed up verification and processing times, ensuring that genuine applicants receive their support faster.

This initiative is seen as an essential safeguard in a system that supports more than 18 million South Africans every month.

What About Existing Beneficiaries?

If you already receive a SASSA grant, there’s no need to worry. The biometric enrolment requirement applies only to new applicants for now. Current beneficiaries will continue to receive their grants as usual without any interruptions.

Van Vrede has reassured Parliament that payments will not be disrupted and emphasized that this is a gradual rollout. By starting with newcomers, SASSA can build up its capacity, ensure staff readiness, and refine the process before possibly expanding the system to all beneficiaries in the future.

Addressing Concerns

While the new system has been welcomed as a necessary step to safeguard funds, some concerns have been raised in Parliament:

  • Rural access: How will people in remote areas enrol biometrically?
  • Vulnerable groups: Will the elderly and disabled face difficulties with in-person enrolment?
  • Data security: How will sensitive biometric data be stored and protected?

SASSA has responded by confirming that biometric enrolment will be free of charge and available at all local offices. To support rural communities, mobile units will be deployed to reach applicants who cannot easily travel. The agency also stressed that all data will be stored securely, with compliance to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) to protect citizens’ privacy.

A Step Towards Greater Security

The pilot phase has already shown positive results, including a significant decline in fraudulent applications. Officials believe the savings generated by eliminating fraud could run into billions of rands annually, money that can be redirected to those who truly need support.

While challenges remain, the move reflects SASSA’s commitment to transparency and accountability. For many South Africans, these grants are not just financial support but a lifeline — and the new biometric system is intended to safeguard that lifeline for years to come.

Remember: If you’re applying for a new SASSA grant from September 2025 onwards, you’ll need to be enrolled biometrically at your local SASSA office. Existing beneficiaries don’t need to take action for now — your payments will continue as normal. You can always check your SASSA grant status here before visiting a branch to confirm updates or payment information.
