Sarafina! The Broadway Hit Musical Comes To Joburg Theatre

Joburg Admin / March 26, 2019

What Is It? Sarafina! The Broadway Hit Musical will be re-staged at the Joburg Theatre in honour of Women's Month 2019. This smash hit musical was originally conceived and directed by Dr. Mbongeni Ngema, with additional songs written by the late Dr. Hugh Masekela. Fast forward to 2019, and Sarafina! remains just as relevant to South African audiences as when it was first premiered. Directed by Nhlanhla Ngema, this re-staging at the Joburg Theatre aims to inspire and encourage young people, while celebrating South Africa's struggle heroines during Women’s month. The musical takes place at Morris Isaacson High School in Soweto, where in 1976, about 200,000 black students assembled to protest against the nationalist government's decree that imposed Afrikaans as the "official" medium of instruction in their classes, instead of their own African languages. In the musical’s explosive finale the Morris Isaacson students present a class play about their imagined Day of Liberation when their hero, Nelson Mandela is released after more than 27 years in prison. Don't miss out on this South African classic at The Joburg Theatre. Boswa Survival When Is It? Friday, 19 July 2019 - Sunday, 11 August 2019. Click here to view show times. Where Is It?
