What Is It?
Artist
Sam Nhlengethwa has a unique relationship with the city of Johannesburg. Having lived outside of the city all his life, Nhlengethwa has always been on the outside looking in. Nevertheless, he has spent most of his professional career working in and around Joburg, in Fordsburg and Doornfontein. Developing a love for the sights and sounds of our wonderful inner city, Sam Nhlengethwa presents 'Joburg Selected' - a series of mix medium portraits and lithograph work of the city if Johannesburg.
Sam Nhlengethwa's work usually features striking characters. In this new body of work however, the character is the city itself.
"The buildings become the persona here," says the artist. "They have their own stories and relate to our history in various ways."
Featuring iconic city landscapes, including
The Market Theatre, Ponte and the now defunct Orbit jazz club, 'Joburg Selected' presents the city in all its glory and gore. Don't miss the exhibition opening at the Goodman Gallery this October.
