In 1884, Fred and Harry Struben discovered Johannesburg’s first payable gold seam at Confidence Reef in Roodepoort, a find that resulted in the gold rush and the resultant development of Roodepoort from a mining camp into the municipality of Maraisburg in 1904, and then into a city in 1977. Visitors to the museum can also learn about the way the people in the 1920's and the 1930's lived as well as the changes that were brought about by the war at that stage. Various art objects are also on display here with Art Nouveau and Art Deco influences being some of the most notable.
