Roller Derby in Joburg!

Joburg Admin / July 28, 2012

Although still very much an un-heard of sport, Roller Derby has made its way to Johannesburg with a number of clubs popping up and competing in 'Jams' around the city. What is it? Roller Derby was created in the 30's in the United States but became popular during the 40's for its almost theatrical qualities. Players would assume wrestling type handles and put on extravagant shows for the audience, resulting in it becoming a form of sports-entertainment, rather than a real competitive sport. Wikipedia describes the game as "a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Teams designate a scoring player (the "jammer") who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team." The sport is currently played on every continent and is even being considered for inclusion in the 2020 Olympics. If you want a taste of this far-out and high-energy sport then you can book tickets to one of their Jams which often include live music and a good night out into the bargain!
