Rock-a-Tutu

Joburg Admin / October 1, 2008

A fantasy fairytale rock ballet The South African Ballet Theatre (SABT) celebrates the festive season with Rock-a-Tutu at The South African State Theatre, Pretoria from Friday, 21st of November – Sunday, 14th of December 2008. Rock-a-Tutu is the perfect way to celebrate the start of the holiday season for families and corporate end-of –year functions alike! This rollicking dance extravaganza was originally conceived and written by Ian von Memerty and Thandi Brewster and directed by Ian von Memerty. Rock-a-Tutu premiered in Pretoria in 2004 and now features several new songs in addition to the original favourites such as Nkalakatha by Mandoza, Have you ever really loved a Woman by Bryan Adams and of course, Dancing Queen by ABBA. The full South African Ballet Theatre company of will be accompanied by a live band, two singers including former Idols Finalist Wafeeq Saffodien (who has opened for Christina Aguilera and Westlife at The Dome) and hunky narrator Carl Beukes from the popular soapie Isidingo. The ballet was originally choreographed by members of The South African Ballet Theatre, the country’s largest professional ballet company, under the direction of Mr von Memerty, and blurs the boundaries between classical ballet and pop-chart hits, allowing the country’s leading ballet dancers to let rip in a spectacular party on pointe. The following dancers have been cast in the title roles: Burnise Silvius, Lauryn Summerley, Penelope Molfessis and Elizabeth Nienaber as Princess Rose and Lee Fennell, Kevin Hurter, Guy Wheatstone and Thabani Ntuli as Jeremiah the Hunky Woodcutter. Angela Malan, Anya Carstens, Shannon Glover and Lauren Dixon-Seager as Cleo, Queen of Denial and Iain MacDonald, Lee Fennell, Humberto Montero and Kevin Hurter as Shaggy the Wolf. This two-act ballet’s storyline is loosely based on popular fairytales such as Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and The Sleeping Beauty but with a decidedly modern twist! Bookings are now open through Computicket on 083 915 8000 or visit www.computicket.com. Ticket prices range from R75 – R170. Friday, 21st of November at 20h00 is half-price night with tickets ranging from R38 – R85. There are also Pensioner and Student discounts available as well as block booking discounts for bookings of 10 tickets or more. The running time of the production is 2 hours 10 minutes, including one twenty minute interval. For additional information, please call Edgar Moagi at The South African Ballet Theatre on the details alongside.
