Reviewing Africa's Greatest Eating Experience

Joburg Admin / May 2, 2017

I was invited by a friend to come have dinner with her and her husband at a place she said is "at Misty Hills". Sure, why not? I could do with a good steak. The idea was to go check out a restaurant I've never been to without reading up about it online. Shakespeare's question, "what's in a name?" hits the nail on the head when it comes to Carnivore in Muldersdrift. Let's just say it's not the kind of place you go to for a salad, although they do have some great vegetarian food on the menu. Situated just off Beyers Naude Drive in Muldersdrift (it's at the Misty Hills Country Hotel, just before you get to the R28), the Carnivore is an African-themed restaurant which works pretty much like a buffet. Except for leaving the table to dish up, everything is brought to you on huge skewers. Yup, there's tonnes of braaied meat going around at the Carnivore. The menu lists chicken drumsticks, pork ribs, gammon, beef, lamb, kudu, zebra and crocodile. And I'm not even kidding about the last two. Every choice of meat is served with a specific sauce which is placed, along with a salad, on a lazy susan in the middle of the table. It being South Africa, the meals come with pap and chakalaka, of course But what's it like? Well, you're not going to visit Carnivore for Michelin-star fanciness because you won't need that kind of stuff here. It's the kind of place you go to when you want to have a beer, chill with your buds and eat some braaivleis. And maybe go Hollywood celebrity watching, as every now and then Arnold Schwarzenegger will pop in to have his fill of local grub. The meats are all prepared to perfection and you can have as much as you like. In fact, there is a South African flag in the middle of each table and as long as it is upright they will keep bringing you more and more food. Needless to say, tourists love this place. This interesting all-you-can-eat restaurant boasts a wide selection of wine to choose from. The Carnivore takes pride in stocking a great collection from some of the top vineyards in the country. A cornerstone of the Recreation Africa Group, the Carnivore franchise includes a restaurant in Nairobi, Kenya. Its Johannesburg branch has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, including Best Traditional Restaurant, Best Restaurant to Take Tourists To, Restaurant of the Month and runner-up Restaurant of the Year. Do yourself a favour and book a table, bring the friends and family and have a meal and a half. My experience was unique and brilliant. It's a fun place to check out with a local is lekker vibe and great food. I am not big on dessert but managed to make some place for a chocolate mousse. Find more information here.
