What Is It?
Redsoil / Brownsoil is an intercontinental, interdisciplinary theatre performance. Devised in collaboration by theatre duo Billy Langa and Mahlatsi Mokgonyana, and Livia Hiselius.
Redsoil / Brownsoil explores the politics behind the very land and earth we walk on. Asking, "What is the difference in feeling between people who walk on the land and own it, and those who walk on the land but don't own it? And, what does it mean to own land, to feel the soil, not only materially but from a spiritual point of view?"
Redsoil/ Brownsoil made its debut at the 2019 Makhanda National Arts Festival. Now, headed up to Joburg for a short run at the Market Theatre, this is a piece of total theatre which combines movement, song and poetry. It uses physical storytelling and visual theatre to draw on the artists’ different cultural, historical and geographical backgrounds. Offering audiences both a South African and outsider perspectives on the critical land debate.
Make sure to book your tickets to see this show. It's well worth braving the cold for.
