The Rand Club: A Jewel in Joburg\'s Crown

Steeped in a somewhat dramatic yet fascinating history, the Rand Club in Joburg is a timeless icon. Images of well-dressed, cigar-smoking, whiskey-drinking men sitting at polished tables dressed to the nines come to mind. Thankfully, that image, as they say, is history. Today, the Rand Club is open to everyone. Women were officially welcomed as members in 1993. In fact, membership is open to anyone 18 years and over of good character, considerate and open-minded, embracing of diversity, critical thinkers, decision-makers, conversation shapers, thought leaders, passionate about Johannesburg’s heritage and future, with an eye for the unusual.

A Storied Past: The Legacy of The Rand Club

We'll try to make this quick, but for a more in-depth look at the club’s history (because not only is it extensive but also incredibly interesting), check out their website. Here's a quick run-through:

1887-1889: A modest brick-and-thatch building rose along the stretch where Commissioner Street met Loveday Street, linking Marshall’s township with Market Square. It was levelled in 1889.

February 1st, 1890: An elaborate two-story club was built. It was the tallest building in Joburg at the time. It housed a bar, a billiards room, a large dining room, four small rooms, a kitchen, a scullery, and various offices.

1902: A decision was made to update the club.

December 1904: The Rand Club as we know it today, with some tweaks, rebuilds and refurbishment as a result of striking miners in 1913, a fire in 2005 and general wear and tear over time.

Rand Club As Custodian

Today’s club is one of Joburg’s finest examples of Edwardian architecture. The staircases, marble floors and the country’s oldest working lift continue to fascinate history buffs and visitors alike. The museum-like elegance protects some of the country’s rarest books, as well as a substantial collection of art and artefacts.

Venues On Offer

The stone, brick and leaded glass speak of history. The décor oozes luxury and comfort. But what lies between the walls? Although guests are allowed, this is a members-only private club. As such, non-members have limited access to the club. They are welcome to dine at the club’s Main Bar, known for Africa’s longest bar. To view the menus, including a cigar menu, check out the website. Entry to the grand billiards room and the gun room, as well as the beautiful entrance hall with an impressive stained-glass dome and grand staircase, is a must-see for non-members. Special permission is needed to access the library, but well worth it.
Non-members are also able to attend events such as book fairs, concerts and opera performances.

The ballroom is the largest room in the club with a capacity of 200 guests. The Juliet balconies, grand columns and coffered Edwardian ceilings make this the perfect celebration room for weddings and birthdays.

The libraries (Buckland and Edward Jordan libraries) are stocked with rare and contemporary books, plus rare Africana. The world’s largest collection of Punch magazine cartoons is found in the Buckland Library. The libraries offer a tranquil space to just sit and read or to just sit.
Tommy’s Bar is a comfortable venue next to the Main Bar. It was originally proposed as a ladies’ bar before women were welcomed as members in 1993.

The Snooker Room has three full-sized tables set in a lavish, comfortable room filled with deep leather chairs.

The Business Centre offers private offices as well as conference centres with cutting-edge technology.

The Anglo Platinum Room, The Mvela Room, The Rhodes Room, and The Ward Room include meeting rooms, free WiFi, coffee, and uninterrupted electricity.
