Protective Hairstyles

Cornrows

Cornrows are great whether you opt for thin, thick or added extensions. You can play around with different styles and patterns. However, if you work in a corporate environment, you can also opt for classic and simple styles. The only downside to cornrows is that they don't last for a very long time – depending on how well you maintain them, they can last for about two to three weeks, max. You'll need to take good care of them to maintain that amazing fresh hair look, and for stretching your hair.

Box Braids

Box braids are still a favourite in the city, not only as a protective hairstyle, but simply as a fabulous hairstyle! With box braids you can also pick the thickness you prefer. But don't go too thin, as this can damage your hairline. Always remember to be cautious with your precious hairline! On the other hand, braids that are too thick can strain your neck. Make sure you go to a good braider to avoid disappointments.

Twist Braids

Twist braids were quite popular a few years ago, but we think they should still be. Although they do not last as long as box braids do, they are still a great alternative for protective hairstyling. A huge upside to twist braids is that they take a relatively short time to plait. And, they are easier and quicker to remove when you're ready for a new hairstyleA hit on the streets right now is grey twist braids, passion twist, Senegalese twists and Nubian twists. protective hairstyles 1

Yarn Braids

For those who dislike synthetic extensions, no worries. Try yarn braids instead. First, you need to find a good braider for this because you don't want to walk around looking homeless. When done right, yarn braids are a huge hit! Since the braiding is done with yarn wool, the hairstyle has a more natural look as opposed to the sometimes shiny finish you get with synthetic braids.

French Braid

The french braid is perfect if you have long hair and don't really want to go to the hair salon. If you're a DIY type of person, you will love this option. With the french braid, you can play around with the style, from plaiting one braid and two braids to plaiting it into a high bun, the options are endless! The sky is the limit when it comes to this hairstyle.

Faux Locks or Goddess Locks

Faux locks were a huge hit a couple of years ago. This style is best for people who want to have locks but don't want to commit to one particular hairstyle. The downside is that faux locks do tend to look fake. Like with most protective hairstyles, get referrals because your hair has to be done right to look good. protective hairstyles 2

Dreadlocks

If you're looking for a long term hairstyle, book yourself an appointment at Jabu Stone and go have your locks done. The upside to locks is that you use your own hair so you don't have to buy extensions or yarn. You can even do your own locks at home provided you've watched a few YouTube videos for guidance.

Bantu Knots

Bantu knots are a throwback hairstyle which is making waves on the streets and is popular with celebrities at the moment. Sure, they're not going to work for every life situation but they're still a cool and funky protective hairstyle to give a try whenever life allows. Bantu knots are quite popular with ladies that have had their hair chemically straightened.

Weaves

Although most people are now opting for options other than weaves, for various reasons, they're still a great protective hairstyle option. Having your hair neatly plaited underneath some great extensions, appeals to a significant percentage of women. Ring up Candi & Co to have your weave done by leading experts. protective hairstyles 3

African Threading

African threading is a great go-to, because it helps to stretch hair. It also allows hair to dry without any heat application. You can definitely style this hairstyle to the nines by doing a beautiful up-do. Or use it before bed time to stretch your hair and give you that perfect curl texture.

Colourful Braids

Colourful braids will never go out of style as they are such a great statement piece that will turn heads everywhere you go. And to boot, it is also a great protective hairstyle. Don't tell us you haven't been tempted by the colourful hairstyles Sho Madjozi rocks so well.

Wigs & Wraps

These hairstyles might be too much admin for our busy lifestyles. Wigs and wraps make an easy and convenient alternative. Invest in a good wig and just slap it on. Or, channel your creative skills and wrap your hair under a cool turban or head-wrap. Some turbans and head-wraps come pre-wrapped so you can just put them on!
