Tin Roof Café

Joburg Admin / August 21, 2015

This month’s feature posed a bit of a catch 22. The restaurant is most probably my most favourite spot in the Capital City – I mentioned in my top 5 spots to try over December. But it’s still a secret that I kind of wanted to keep to myself. My internal conflict arose when I had decided to share my secret place, because then it won’t be such a secret anymore. However, taking my duty as fabulous-sharing blogger, I knew that if you’re willing to take the drive to Tin Roof Café, you are worthy of knowing my little secret. And the restaurant deserves much more than a mere mention in things-to-do article.     This rustic, Italian eatery was recommended to us almost two years ago and I have never regretted one of my many visits. It’s set on a plot out on Lynnwood Road, removing it from the hustle and bustle of the city to create a lovely escape to nature – with great food and wine! I don’t know what it is about his place that I love so much. It might be the welcoming atmosphere, or the opportunity to dine under the trees. Perhaps it’s the natural surroundings or the horses that greet you at the gate. They call themselves a “country restaurant” and that’s exactly what they are, but with added flair and style. There’s even a small area that you can book for some extra privacy (it’s outside but enclosed with vines) and it makes you feel as if you’re the only person there. Or maybe it’s just the simple joy of dining in the open air, with a crisp Sauvignon Blanc and warm sunshine on your skin. It could also be that every single dish on their menu is something that I would love to eat. I always order something different (almost always) and it’s delicious every single time. The one thing I do know for sure is that the Tuscan Bread Salad is my ultimate favourite dish. I crave it often and it’s a big reason why I try to plan special lunches at Tin Roof Café. Trust me, you have to try it – it’s wonderfully salty, beautifully-served and probably the best salad I’ve had in my life. Think olives, artichokes, roasted peppers, sundried tomatoes, pancetta, parmesan and home-made croutons. Yum!   With our previous visit we tried a starter from their specials menu, but I have to say the bread salad still came out on top. For mains, the pork belly was simply delicious, served with poached apples, mash and fresh veggies. The fillet is also fabulous, topped with olive salsa and Grana Padano. I can most definitely recommend their crispy-based, beautiful pizzas and their homemade gnocchi. Basically the biggest dilemma is probably having to choose what to have. Luckily their menu is not one of those 15-pager books, so while you’re basking in the sun at a table decorated with fresh flowers, it’s actually quite relaxing to take your time deciding. The dessert menu consists of only six items, besides the specials, and includes a cheese platter served with luxury melba toast. I recommend ending off your meal with the passion pavlova. It’s as divine as it looks and sharing it meant that I only wanted more. I really do hope that your visit is as heavenly as mine always is. And Tin Roof Café could become our little secret.
