POPArt Presents Wake Up South Africa!

Joburg Admin / June 4, 2019

What Is It?

Wake Up South Africa first made its premiere at the WITS Theatre in 2017. This production was conceptualised by director Loraine Beaton in response to the Fees Must Fall and Rhodes Must Fall student movements. Three years on, Wake Up South Africa is still tackling prevalent social race issues. Catch it at POPArt Theatre in Maboneng this June before it heads off to the National Arts Festival 2019. Presented as a morning television show, the play explores the idea of race from across the political spectrum. Scripted using dialogue from actual South Africans, this multi-media theatre piece takes a playful look at the extreme political positions we have witnessed in online spaces in recent years. Expect to laugh, sigh and gasp as the characters express their innermost thoughts and feelings. We'll see you there!
