Once In A Lifetime Adventure

Once in Joburg is an innovative boutique hotel meets hostel located in central Braamfontein. The hotel opened its doors in 2016, offering a unique bouquet of services to both local and international travellers. Once In Joburg is the ideal place to sleep, eat, work and explore all the city has to offer. Plus, its budget-friendly accommodation is great for students and backpackers looking to go on a weekend adventure. Read our review of the hotel here if we haven't got you convinced that it's a must-visit spot for avid adventurers and curious nomads alike. Once In Joburg

COVID-19 Complications

With current lockdown regulations and travel bans, the hotel industry is under strife. Once In Joburg is no different, as they can no longer operate as they normally would. However, this has not put a damper on their spirits. The Once In Joburg team have been working tirelessly to keep themselves afloat and to continue to support their staff. Unfortunately, many of their staff may not be able to earn their basic salaries during this time, which is why the Once In Joburg team have introduced the Once Tribe Fund. In a Facebook post they wrote: "COVID-19 has devastated us all and our hard-working team will be hit the hardest during this time. We have therefore started a fund for the affected Once Tribe members who are unable to earn a basic income... Any donation will be highly appreciated." The Once Tribe Fund is intended to support 57 members of the Once Travel team who come from underprivileged communities and will not be able to sustain themselves and their families without an income. The sole purpose of these funds is to reduce the financial burden of the pandemic on the Once Travel staff, and provide hospitality training and up-skilling while they cannot work. Ubuntu Beds

While the hotel may not be able to function as normal, they have joined the Ubuntu Beds campaign - an initiative that aims to unite hospitality businesses that now stand empty, with South Africa's healthcare workers who are fighting the virus on the front lines. In the spirit of ubuntu, hostels, hotels, BnBs and guest-houses affected by travel bans and lockdown regulations can now offer safe harbour to doctors and nurses. The initiative aims to ensure that tired healthcare workers need not travel long journeys home to their families. In this way, the hospitality industry actively contribute to the safety of more South Africans. Once In Joburg have jumped on board to support this great initiative, preparing beds for health care workers over the last week. They are now ready to welcome these unsung superheroes, with the generosity and care that they would welcome any other guest. The hotel is also open to travellers seeking emergency accommodation and rooms for self-quarantine. To ensure the health and safety of both their guests and staff, Once In Joburg have implemented a number of strict hygiene procedures:
  • Minimising number of people in social areas. Designated rooms will have access to the communal kitchens at certain times to ensure they can sanitise between small groups.
  • All organised activities will be done on-site rather than outside at public locations, such as parks.
  • Increased sanitation of bathrooms.
  • Reduced number of people sharing in a dorm room.
  • Health and safety posters informing people on how to maintain sanitation and hygiene.
