O Galeto in Olivedale

Joburg Admin / August 8, 2017

Nestled in the heart of Olivedale (in the same shopping complex as Café del Sol) is where you’ll find O Galeto, the newest addition to Randburg’s long list of awesome restaurants. The family-run eatery (yes, you’ll see several members behind the counter, in the kitchen or serving patrons) was inspired by a genuine love of great food and Sunday feasts shared with family and friends. Armando Ferreira, a member of said family, revealed that the original restaurant opened in 1984 in the south of Johannesburg and was reborn in 2017 – with the same delicious homemade recipes. The ambience is casual and laid-back, evoking that homely feel of sharing a meal around the table with family. The décor features tiles that hark back to traditional mosaics found in Portugal yet with a modern twist, and the mural is a scene of Costa do Sol in Mozambique. Now, onto the important info: the food. Specialising in Portuguese and Mozambican cuisine, O Galeto boasts an authentic menu of traditional and popular dishes, including specialities like bitoque (Portuguese steak, egg and chips), prawn curry, crab curry and the ever-popular prego (in both beef and chicken). According to the Head Chef, Jose, the succulent LM-style flame-grilled chicken is a favourite, as the meat, marinated for five hours, just falls off the bone. For starters, we tucked into prawn rissoles (being Portuguese, we just had to have this) and traditional chicken soup (canja de galinha) – there really is nothing better than chicken soup for the soul... For mains, it was saucy trinchado served with chips (batatas fritas), LM-style chicken and prego rolls. Though you can choose your favourite from an array of sides, including salad, veggies, rice, mashed or boiled potatoes, there really is only one option you should be getting, and that’s a full portion of milho frito. This is a Portuguese-style pap that’s fried till it’s golden brown and crisp, and it’s just deliciousness on a plate. Seriously. Though we opted for takeaways, they also have a small eat-in area. Our only criticism? Our to-go portions could have been slightly larger. But don't expect any frills – it's an honest, down-to-earth place serving good food. So, make a plan this weekend and gather your family to feast on a few iconic Portuguese dishes. Our top tips? Come hungry, get a few dishes to share (or people will eat off your plate), sit back, relax and enjoy the experience!
