New Restaurants To Check Out In 2019 (Q1)

Joburg Admin / January 17, 2019

Douglas + Hale A distant but familiar taste is left in your mouth as you step into Douglas + Hale for the first time. Built in the wake of The National in Parktown North, James Diack's latest offering under his acclaimed Brightside Farm umbrella has become a popular post-work and weekend hangout among the Joburg wining and dining class. For the food, James is keeping it simple and he’s retaining some of The National’s favourite dishes. “It’s a small, simple menu that'll keep you interested through the evening,” he explains. The relaxed atmosphere is set to become a location-must for after-work cocktails, pre-dinner drinks or a night cap before you head home (in an Uber – no drunk driving allowed). Step in Tanen Wine Bar - the new kid on the Melville dining scene. Above and beyond a beautiful collection of vino, Tanen Wine Bar offers a condensed tapas menu consisting of starters, mains and dessert. Items range from duck baklava (made with sumac phyllo pastry) to traditional lamb served with babaganoush. With the ruling hand in the kitchen leaning towards seafood, beef and pork based tapas patrons can expect items such as fishcakes served with capers, fried squid, pork fillet skewers, and harrisa marinated sirloin. Details: Click here Ba-Pita Laid back, charming and interesting. These are only a few words one can use to describe Ba-Pita in Melville.  Situated at the top of 7th Street the sight, smell, and sound of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean culture engulfs you as you step through the door as the kitchen creates an array of Shawarma, platters, laffa, and tapas. To boot, the restaurant itself has quite a bit of history. Though it's a new place through and through, it has its roots in the 90s as one of the go-to eateries before taking on the city's thumping nightlife, then situated in Yeoville. It's amazing to see how things have come full circle and a legend has returned. Details: Click here Big Bad Wolf What do you get when you mix a pizzeria and a bar? You end up with something called the Big Bad Wolf. Head to Midrand and check out this authentically interesting take on pizza and cocktails as they meet under a roof dressed in the latest interior design. The food's good, the drinks whipped up by a pro, and the prices not too shabby at all. The only question remaining is... does pineapple go on pizza? Of course it does!
