The New Kid on the Culinary Block: Urbanologi

Joburg Admin / June 29, 2016

The local foodie Facebook pages have been abuzz with excitement about the new kid in town – Urbanologi. A quick look at their website and it becomes clear what all the fuss is about: vibey new-age setting, spectacular drinks menu (with a selection of Mad Giant craft beers) and novel food pairings that excite even the most difficult to please. But would this restaurant that calls its food "urban-garde" (owing to its fused influence between its urban setting and avant garde menu), live up to all the promises and hype? On the back of our lovely afternoon lunch, the answer is a resounding "Yes"! Set in the Mad Giant brewery on 1 Fox Street, Ferreirasdorp, with funky industrial styling, Urbanologi has a great atmosphere. Our head waiter, Albert, and his team made our table of five feel welcomed and well looked after. With so many appetising tapas combinations to choose from, we opted to try every dish on the menu. One thing's for sure, a trip to Urbanologi would be incomplete without indulging in the deep fried potatoes with seaweed emulsion (R35), the crispy caramel pork shoulder, persimmon, date puree and gorgonzola mousse (R45) as well as the marjoram cured lamb rib khusiyaki, french oak wood teriyaki and roast apple (R110). The tapas are generously sized, and two adults could easily get away with ordering four or five dishes (although you’ll want to try more). Making full use of their user-friendly online reservation system, the Urbanologi team make every effort to source fresh ingredients from the local markets daily – something which a discerning guest can quickly taste when those beautifully crafted and well-presented crispy dishes reach your table. With something for everyone, Urbanologi attracts different crowds, from hipsters to trendy city dwellers, but is probably not ideal for young children who would want to play in a kiddies area though. A mere 12 minutes’ drive from the famous Maboneng Precinct (just on the other end of Fox Street), you’ll find ample secure parking right across the street from Urbanologi. Conveniently located close the highway, it’s worth Ubering there as well. The verdict: from a lazy afternoon out to special celebrations, Urbanologi will delight your senses and is ideal for any occasion. urbanologi outside and food Words and photos by Liz van Zyl Have you been to Urbanologi?
