Joburg Admin / April 13, 2016

Gallery 2

Gallery 2 (formerly known as Gallery on the Square) is located along what is known as the "Art Strip" on Jan Smuts Avenue in Parkwood. Over the last two decades this gallery has established itself as one of Joburg's premium fine art galleries. Exhibiting the likes of Kim Berman, Carl Roberts, Andrew Sutherland and John Baloyi, Gallery 2 is a must-visit for fine art enthusiasts. Res Gallery

Res Gallery is another "Art Strip" resident. However, this gallery founded by Ricardo and Simone Fornoni with Steven Goldblatt, is all about new media and digital art. Their focus is on promoting digital media art, from limited edition prints to interactive installations, and mixed media artworks. Old boundaries are challenged and new ideas emerge here. Visit them to explore new notions about what it means to be human. Details: 142 Jan Smuts Ave, Parkwood, Johannesburg | +27 (0)74 141 2091 | [email protected] fine art

David Krut Projects

You are spoilt for choice here, as David Krut Projects have two gallery locations in Johannesburg. You can stop by the original gallery space in Parkwood, or take a trip to the trendy Maboneng Precinct to visit their second venue. The gallery based at Arts on Main, produces fine art editions with artists William Kentridge, Diane Victor, Deborah Bell and a number of other South African and international artists. As another bonus, the David Krut Projects galleries both boast impressive bookstores just nearby. Specialising in art books and unique coffee table collectibles, the David Krut Bookstore should be your first stop on the way back from the gallery. Details: Click here for gallery details.

Art It Is

Parkwood certainly is the place to go in Joburg for great art! Another Parkwood gallery, Art It Is prides itself on being a welcoming space for everyone, from seasoned art critics to the everyday man. This gallery space also breaks the rules by doubling as a place to buy local art at affordable prices. Their extensive art library is well stocked with works by the likes of Isabella Mostert, Alex Vosloo and Alexandre and many more. If you are looking for a local art piece to decorate your home, this is the place to find it. Check out their online store before you visit. AGOG Gallery

The Maboneng Precinct is home to surprisingly few public fine art galleries. However, in 2016 the trendy suburb became the permanent residence of the AGOG Gallery. A dedicated arts and performance venue, this gallery space is a hub for both local and international artists. It spans two floors and is open five days a week from 11:00 in the morning until 02:00 at night! This is a must-visit venue for night owls looking for something to do in the city. ABSA Art Gallery

The ABSA Art Gallery offers art lovers something a little different. Located within the Barclays Towers North building in Johannesburg CBD, the ABSA Gallery combines creative with corporate. But, this does not mean that only art scholars are welcome to visit this space. Anyone with an interest in art is sure to find something to delight their senses amongst the gallery's extensive collection. From  large-scale commissioned pieces to young contemporary artists and historical South African pieces dating back to the 1900s, the ABSA Gallery has it all. Johannesburg Art Gallery

If there is just one gallery on this list you must visit, it's the Johannesburg Art Gallery. Situated within the iconic Joubert Park, the Johannesburg Art Gallery boasts a collection of 17th-century Dutch paintings, 18th and 19th-century British and European art, and 19th-century South African works. Plus, for those of you with a more modern taste in art, there are 20th-century contemporary pieces, as well as recent works. JAG is the largest fine art gallery on the continent. From Picasso to Pierneef, they have everything you need to become a true art admirer. Details: Cnr Klein and King George St, Joubert Park, Johannesburg CBD | 011 725 3130 | [email protected]

Stevenson Gallery

Last, but certainly not least is the Stevenson Gallery. Formerly located in Braamfontein, the Stevenson Gallery now occupies an even larger venue in Parktown North. This is where contemporary art lives - exhibiting a wide range of artists including Zanele Muholi, Steven Cohen, Penny Siopis and Portia Zvavahera. Great debates happen here. Visit them if you are interested in engaging with artists and fellow thinkers.
