Most Common Shipping Container Sizes and Their Uses

Joburg Admin / February 25, 2025

Shipping containers are the backbone of global trade, offering a standardized and secure method for transporting goods across land and sea. Their versatility also extends beyond logistics, with many containers repurposed for housing, storage, and modular construction.

However, not all containers are created equal. They come in various sizes, each designed for specific uses. Below, we explore the most common shipping container sizes and their applications.

20-Foot Shipping Container (Standard TEU)

One of the most widely used containers for sale in the world, the 20-foot container, also known as a Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU), measures approximately 20 feet (6.1 meters) in length, 8 feet (2.44 meters) in width, and 8.5 feet (2.59 meters) in height.

It offers a volume of around 1,172 cubic feet (33.2 cubic meters) and can hold up to 28 metric tons of cargo.

Uses:

  • Ideal for transporting bulk goods such as grains, machinery, or construction materials.
  • Frequently used as a secure, portable storage unit for businesses and construction sites.
  • Popular for small-scale container homes, mobile offices, or pop-up shops.

40-Foot Shipping Container (FEU)

These 40-foot containers for sale, also known as a Forty-foot Equivalent Unit (FEU), is double the length of the 20-foot version but maintains the same width and height. This gives it a volume of 2,390 cubic feet (67.7 cubic meters) and a typical payload capacity of up to 30 metric tons.

Uses:

  • Preferred for transporting larger shipments, including furniture, electronics, and raw materials.
  • Frequently repurposed into spacious homes, offices, and even schools.
  • Used for temporary or long-term storage of oversized goods.

40-Foot High Cube Container

A variation of the standard 40-foot container, the high cube version adds an extra foot in height, making it 9.5 feet (2.89 meters) tall. This increase allows for additional cargo capacity, making it ideal for transporting voluminous yet lightweight goods.

Uses:

  • Useful for items that require extra vertical space, such as stacked goods or machinery.
  • Popular for container home designs that require higher ceilings.

10-Foot Shipping Container

The 10-foot container is a smaller, more portable option with a volume of around 560 cubic feet (15.9 cubic meters). It is commonly used in urban areas where space is limited.

Uses:

  • Ideal for businesses needing secure, small-scale storage solutions.
  • Used as portable workspaces on construction sites or event venues.
  • Converted into ticket booths, security checkpoints, or exhibition stands.

Conclusion

Choosing the right shipping container size depends on the nature of the transportation needs and potential repurposing. Whether for on-site storage or creative construction, these containers provide unmatched flexibility and durability. Understanding their dimensions and uses helps businesses and individuals maximize efficiency while keeping costs in check.
