Sushi is a Japanese dish of specially prepared vinegared rice (sushi-meshi), usually with some sugar and salt, combined with a variety of ingredients, such as seafood (most commonly and often raw), vegetables, and occasionally tropical fruits... but you already knew that.
But I am not here to tell you about the lustrous history of California Rolls (such as that it was first made in Canada by a Japanese chef - sorry Daniel for getting that wrong - much appreciated)... what I am going to do is tell you about the famous Sushi Bus of Joburg. Yup. It's exactly what you think it is. You've most likely seen them at festivals, markets, and maybe even a wedding or three. The Sushi Bus is brilliant little food truck and catering service started by the most enthusiastic individuals. Their unmissable white and ocean blue VW hippie van can sometimes been seen doing the rounds around Joburg.
What makes the Sushi Bus so unique (besides the fact that they drive around in an old minivan) is their service. The simple smile and friendliness when taking an order the reason why I make a point of visiting them every time I go to the Neighbourgoods market in Braamfontein - which has become somewhat of a second home to the Sushi Bus (they have a booth in the market, and don't drive the kombie up the ramp as you may or may not have thought).
Above and beyond the usual California rolls, maki, roses, and fashion sandwiches, the Sushi Bus also serves speciality dishes such as rocky prawn tempura and beautiful salmon roses.
