Luscious Lunch at Doppio Zero, Bedfordview

Joburg Admin / June 14, 2019

Doppio Zero in Bedfordview is located at what can only be described as an odd shopping centre on Hawley Road. The "centre" is not quite a centre, so much as a group of shops and restaurants huddled together on a tree-lined street. The Doppio Zero is on its own end of this centre, offering an almost secluded atmosphere. Patrons have the option of indoor or outdoor seating. We don't recommend the indoor seating as it offers a splendid view of their display of pastries, breads and cakes. For your own health and waistline, rather go for the outdoor seating where you can feel the fresh air, get some much needed vitamin D and have a spectacular view of the green shrubbery lining the street. We were (unfortunately) seated inside, with a perfect view of their display. They had various freshly-baked breads, croissants, cookies and cakes that simply just make your mouth water. Thankfully, the menu was handed to us quickly, so we didn't have to spend much time drooling like a bull dog staring at a steak.   For drinks, I decided to try the Cookies and Caramel Steamer (I guess I couldn't resist the decadence of Doppio Zero after all), while my partner decided to get the Filter Coffee. The steamer came out with caramel sauce dripping off the rim of the glass which was covered in cookie crumbs whereas the coffee was its exact opposite, strong and bitter. We chose to share a starter, as we wanted to save room for dessert and opted for the Mozzarella Croquettes. One can never have too much cheese. These were fillets of mozzarella in a crispy layer of crumbs served with a creamy and spicy dip. It was simply delicious and perfect to whet the appetite. For mains, I chose the Rainbow Bowl. This is a trio of quinoa, couscous, buckwheat, roast beetroot, chimichurri tofu, baby tomatoes, avocado, nigella seeds and green hummus. The chewiness of the buckwheat paired beautifully with the sweetness of the beetroot and the tartness of the tomato. The hummus added a splendid creaminess to the dish and the nigella seeds, a little je ne sais quoi. coffee   My partner opted for the Pollo al Forno. This is a baked pasta dish with grilled chicken, garlic, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, basil, onion, rigatoni, and parmesan in creamy sauce. The garlic and tomatoes compliment the chicken perfectly while the mushrooms add some interesting texture, all of this is made even better with the copious amounts of cheese. As I said before, there can never be too much cheese. After the mains, we were simply too stuffed to have any more. Which is a pity as I still dream of that amazing cake display that had cheesecakes, chocolate cakes and what looked like the most decadent slice of red velvet cake. I am still drooling just thinking about those cakes. Oh well, all the more reason to go back. What I loved about this restaurant were all the options. I could choose to sit outside in the warm breeze or opt for a more secluded spot indoors. I, as a vegetarian, also had a large variety of options to choose from. Doppio Zero also has a nice selection of vegan options including a pizza and pasta dish. This is a nice change from the usual choice of a green salad or chips. There was also a wide range of options for meat lovers and a range of choices for the sweet tooth. I also loved that one can pick up a loaf of bread here or a handful of croissants if you chose to dine at home.   Overall this was a great dining experience and I will definitely be back for a cup of coffee and that slice of cake. Or maybe even two. Find more information here.
