What Is It?
The Evergreen Arts Centre presents
Lephalale The Musical at Soweto Theatre this June. This family-friendly musical tells the story of 17-year-old Phuti and her vibrant 56-year-old grandmother, Mmatsebo. Phuti has spent all her life in the suburbs of Tshwane. As a result, she has lost touch with her cultural heritage. She also shows a severe lack of respect for cultural customs. Astonished by her behaviour, Phuti's grandmother endeavors to teach her about the history of Lephalale when she returns home.
Lephalale The Musical is told through song and dance. This includes Setswana, Sepedi and Xibelane traditional dances, as well as contemporary Koffifi, Gospel and Afro-fusion styles. There is a 5-piece live band and 20 energetic performers.
Written and directed by Bafedile Masasa who hails from Lephalale.
