Ktv Market Day

Joburg Admin / September 10, 2008

Business-minded youngsters around the country showed the adults how it’s done at the 2008 Ktv Market Day, which took place on Saturday, 6th of September. Created to teach children about business in a fun and entertaining way, Ktv Market Day has hosted over 30 000 children between the ages of six and 16 during its history. This year, more than 400 budding entrepreneurs flocked to the Brightwater Commons in Johannesburg for the Gauteng Ktv Market Day to compete in the various categories and sell their wares. The winners were as follows: - Regional Overall Winner – Thomas Kruger and Thabo Nyaku, who sold explosive experiments under the name “TNT”. The two boys won R10 000 towards education, a Sony Playstation 3 and games, a Woolworths voucher to the value of R1 000, hampers from Bakers biscuits and Nestlé, and a laptop and printer. They also won first prize in the Best Product category. - Best Stall – Karlien de Beer and Wilandri van de Walt ran a stall called “Once upon a time sweets”, which was set up to look like an old-fashioned sweet store. - Best Sales Team or Individual – Francois Janse van Rensburg and his team Vincent, Claude, Kyle, Marius and Tyron taught shoppers how to make art in their stall, “Alien Art”. - You / Drum / Huisgenoot Innovation Award - Barbara Seabatsie and her team sold recycled products (caps and purses ) made from cold drink cans at their stand, “Destiny”. Other awards included Best Group Performance (to the Saleji Group) and Best Individual Performance (to Jude Cordell). “The Johannesburg event was very well supported, both by the young entrepreneurs and by the general public” says Deirdre King, an entrepreneur and business-owner who formed part of the panel of judges. “I found the young people particularly inspiring – their enthusiasm is completely contagious!” King notes that as an entrepreneur, she believes that it is imperative that projects like Ktv Market Day are supported by business and government. “Our country is filled with bright young talent that might otherwise not be utilised,” she stresses. Marlon Roelfze, best known for his role as Shaun in Egoli, was also one of the judges at the Gauteng Ktv Market Day. “The inspiring thing for me was to see the mix of culture represented,” he remarks. “And the creative talent is astounding. As South Africans, we should really be putting money behind the arts, because we have so much talent.” For more information about Ktv Market Day, visit the website alongside, or contact Nomntu on the number alongside.
