Knit-a-Square

Joburg Admin / May 22, 2009

Knit-a-Square is a non-profit organisation that was set up to bring attention to the plight of millions of AIDS orphans in Southern Africa. Knit-a-Square began in October 2008 and provides blankets for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty. In just three months, this internet-based organisation has attracted 1600 members from 26 countries around the world. Members knit 20cm x 20cm squares and post them to a church-based charity in Johannesburg. There, volunteers sew the squares into blankets for distribution. The organisation works in conjunction with Hotel Hope, a charity that provides food, shelter and love to children infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS. Knit-a-Square.com has been set up to request the knitters and crocheters of the world to send in their knitted squares, in order to be make up into blankets by the Soweto Comfort Club charity. To date, 8647 squares have reached South Africa, with members also sending in 530 items of clothing such as sweaters, hats and vests. Should you wish to get involved, squares can be mailed to: Knit-a-Square Soweto Comfort Club Private Bag X900 Bryanston 2021 Please mark on outside of envelope: KNITTED SQUARES ONLY. For more details and even instructions on how to knit, please visit the website using the links alongside.
