Jozi Gold Screenings at the Bioscope Independent Cinema

Joburg Admin / July 8, 2019

What Is It?

Sylvia Vollenhoven and Fredrik Gertten's Jozi Gold is headed to the Bioscope this July. A fictionalisation about the Joburg gold mining industry and the radioactive waste it has left behind. Johannesburg mines have produced a third of all the gold mined in human history. But now the gold is running out. And as the mines fall apart, the city must confront an environmental nightmare. Tons of radioactive waste pollute the air and turn water into poison every day. In steps an unlikely hero - the glamorous Mariette Liefferink. A grandmother who totters across this apocalyptic wasteland with perfectly manicured nails, in impossibly high heels and a Chinese cheongsam dress. Mariette is on a relentless mission to uncover the truth and force the gold industry to clean up its dangerous mess. She reaches out across South Africa’s sharp social divides, from poor shantytown dwellers to Afrikaner farmers. Governments, NGOs and international scientists all call on her for help, too. Don't miss the screenings of Jozi Gold at the Bioscope Independent Cinema.
