What Is It?

The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra have announced their super exiting Summer Season lineup for 2020. Featuring a number of local and international musicians, this series of four concerts is a definite must-attend. Running at the Linder Auditorium from 12 February 2020 to 7 March 2020, shows take place consecutively each week. Whether you attend one concert or all, the JPO Summer Season is sure to change your perspective on classical music. "We are proud to showcase our 2020 World Symphony Series this Summer Season with a spectacular lineup of international talent and leading South African soloists, who will join us in taking the experience of concert going in the City of Johannesburg ever onwards and upwards," says JPO Artistic Director and Chief Executive, Bongani Tembe.

Here is the lineup of shows for the 2020 season:

Concert 1

The JPO Summer Season launches itself with a special Valentine's Variety Gala programme. American conductor, William Eddins shares the spotlight with two guest soloists, the Montenegrin guitarist, Goran Krivokapić, and the gifted young South African soprano, Zandile Mzazi. This trio will join the orchestra in performing a richly curated programme of concert bon-bons by Berlioz, Rodrigo, Mascagni, Massenet, Khachaturian, Verdi, Lehar and Tchaikovsky. This concert takes place on Wednesday, 12 February 2020; Thursday, 13 February 2020 and Friday, 14 February 2020.  Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra  

Concert 2

Japanese maestro, Yasuo Shinozaki returns to the JPO podium, putting his players through their paces in three concert staples of widely different character: Ravel’s hugely popular Bolero; and his fiercely taxing Left Hand Piano Concerto (soloist the prize-winning French pianist, Maxime Zecchini); concluding with a show-stopping outing for Mussorgsky’s masterly Pictures at an Exhibition. This concert takes place on Wednesday, 19 February 2020 and Thursday, 20 February 2020. 

Concert 3

Netherlands born conductor, Arjan Tien, salutes the 250th Beethoven anniversary year with performances of two Beethoven favourites: the Leonore Overture No 1 and the Triple Concerto, played by pianist, Malcolm Nay, violinist Tai Murray and cellist, Aristide du Plessis. The evening closes with Bizet’s delightful Symphony in C. This concert takes place on Wednesday, 26 February 2020 and Thursday, 27 February 2020.  JPO Summer season

Concert 4

Dynamic Israeli-American conductor, Daniel Boico takes the helm for the JPO Summer Season's final concerts. With a two-piece programme featuring Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, soloist Jan Jiracek von Arnim, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No 4. The final concerts for the JPO 2020 summer season takes place on Wednesday, 04 March 2020, Thursday, 05 March 2020 and Saturday, 07 March 2020.

Wednesday, 12 February 2020 - Saturday, 07 March 2020. Shows begin at 19:30.
