#JoburgCares: Where To Lend A Helping Hand In The City

Joburg Admin / November 8, 2018

Charities Around Town

We give where we can and we focus on making the world a better place, one good deed at a time. If you're looking for places to lend a helping hand, we've got you covered. Remember, you don't have to necessarily give out tons of money to show that you care; there are many other ways to give: through your actions, your time or donating items. Whatever it is, it will be appreciated.

Kids Haven

Kids Haven has been in existence since 1992, focusing on homeless kids and children in crisis in Benoni on the East Rand. As a shelter, they protect these children by taking them off the streets into a secure environment, caring for them, giving them therapy, educating them and ultimately giving them a future. They need your help to make a change one child at a time. Find out how you can be part of this organisation by becoming a Friend of Kids Haven or help with a donation by clicking here!

Door Of Hope

Every child matters — this is the foundation on which the Door of Hope is built. Situated in Berea, they save abandoned babies, look after them in baby houses, which are as much like homes as possible, facilitate their adoptions or settle them in the Door of Hope Village where they become part of a large family. When you visit their website, you are welcomed with a heartwarming quote by Archbishop Desmond Tutu that reads: 'Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness'. Hence, the name Door of Hope. Visit their website to see how you can give back with your time, donations or be involved in other ways with this worthy cause.

The Johannesburg Children's Home

A safe haven for children in Observatory, the Johannesburg Children's Home is the oldest charitable institution in the city (established in 1892!). Since inception, it has been welcoming kids with open arms and caters for the ages of 3 to 18. The Home relies on support from the public and your donation could go towards helping the littlies get kitted out for school next year with uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and stationery, for instance. Visit their website for more information.

Better SA

Best described as the Uber of volunteering, Better SA is on the move to make a change. They are literally on the move with their hop-on, hop-off bus service that's taking the hassle out of volunteering. Amazing right? This is why we want to be part of this cause — the service is free of charge and each experience is fully facilitated, ensuring that volunteers make the biggest impact in the time they have available. To get involved, all that's required is that you book a spot on one of their buses, arrive and hop on. Better SA does the rest, so don't sweat. Volunteer activities range from teaching computer skills, playing educational games and typing up handwritten CVs for the unemployed to visiting the elderly, painting inspirational murals and doing environmental clean-ups. To find out how to book a spot and be part of Better SA, visit their website.

Magical Moments

Magical Moments is a registered, non-profit organisation reaching out to abused, abandoned, impoverished, neglected, orphaned and vulnerable children in Johannesburg. Focusing on creating happy childhood memories through early childhood developmental experiences and education, they take kids on outings or guide them through creative play in their own environments. So, if you would like to 'put a smile on little faces, treats in little tummies and tickle little taste buds' visit this website to find out how.

South African National Council For The Blind (SANCB)

SANCB would be lost without donors like you, who bring them closer every day to their goal of helping blind and partially sighted persons to live the lives they want to lead. They aim to prevent blindness as a starting point and also campaign for the inclusion of blind and partially sighted people in our society. Tell your friends to tell their friends — together you can make a difference in a blind person's life. If you would like to leave a gift to the SANCB in your will, and support their work after you've gone, please contact 012 452 3811 or email [email protected]. Or simply visit this website.

Alzheimer's South Africa

Alzheimer’s is becoming more prevalent and is devasting to sufferers and those who care for them. South Africa is an NPC that works with multiple organisations and partners to provide support to families of sufferers, as well as the caregivers. They also aim to improve the quality of life of people with Alzheimer’s or dementia. You can lend a helping hand by simply donating. Visit this website for more information. Know of any other place where we can go volunteer at? Please be sure to mention it down below!
