Joburg IG Accounts That Will Show You the City in a New Way

Joburg Admin / November 16, 2021

Manthe Ribane @manthe.ribane

One of the coolest people around and one part of sibling trio Dear Ribane, Manthe’s account is an ode to minimal style and décor. And, she's got a  love for neutrals in the least boring way. A Joburg native who has graced stages the world over, she was once a back up dancer for Die Antwoord and a former member of the Joburg style collective ‘Smarties’. Her page is curated in a manner that whispers aspiration and elegance. It’s no wonder she was recently appointed editor-at-large for House & Leisure - her Instagram credentials speak for themselves. Her equally stylish siblings sometimes make an appearance on her page. From her signature, one-of-a-kind threads (some of which she's designed herself), to magnificent architecture, it’s like flipping through the pages of a really expensive catalogue.

Roy Potterill @roywrench

Photographer Roy Potterill has moved to Cape Town, and so isn't strictly a 'Joburg Instagrammer' anymore. But we like to believe his heart still lies in the City of Gold, and his pictures of Johannesburg are simply awe inspiring. Roy captures Jozi through its people and architecture - taxis, pedestrians, office buildings, vendors, bridges, underpasses, robots ... This is the Joburg removed from gated communities and clipped suburban lawns. The Joburg the majority of its residents live in and know intimately.

Maria McCloy @mariamccloy

A notable Joburg cultural practitioner, journalist and entrepreneur, Maria McCloy wears her love for the continent and the City of Gold on her sleeve, as evident on her account. If you’d like a front seat to some of the trendiest, colourful and vision board-worthy images of some of Joburg’s finest, look no further than McCloy’s page. McCloy is a longstanding figure in the culture and entertainment scene in Johannesburg. She co-founded the now defunct Black Rage - a multimedia production company that was responsible for the “culture bible” Rage.co.za as well as record company Outrageous Records, which brought us shows like Street Journal. From showcasing her own fashion creations, beautiful people she meets around town, the latest sneakers on her wish list, to roundups on the latest in entertainment, this account would definitely be a welcome presence on your feed.

Heather Mason @2summers

Sometimes, it takes an outsider's eyes to show us the beauty of where we live. Heather Mason is an American photographer who moved to Johannesburg, and her Instagram account @2summers is an ode to the vibrant, tender, rough-around-the-edges beauty of our city. Be it a millennial pink couch outside a beauty salon in Mayfair, or the almost fantastical fruit décor of a fruit stand, Heather's eye will catch it in all its luscious detail. Yay for Heather!

Khanya Mzongwana @undignifiedza

Khanya is part of a new crop of young black chefs doing food on their own terms and in the most delectable and aesthetically pleasing way. A contributing editor at Taste magazine, Khanya uploads a new mouth-watering picture almost every day, which will sort you out for breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Her page is filled with innovative takes on old South African favorites as well as new creations. One of the biggest draw cards to her account is that the food also looks accessible. Really fancy, but something that would not be a pain to try at home. Her pictures make every recipe she posts a must-try. From potato and leek flapjacks to green samp soup, you will want to try every single dish! She's also really funny and her stories are equally as engaging as her timeline.

Beediamondhead @bee_diamondhead

Beediamondhead is one of the country's most prolific stylists/creative directors, having worked on many local and international ads and magazines alike. Her feed illustrates examples of her styling work, and proves why she deserves the 'prolific' title. Her page dives into the behind-the-scenes grafting that stylists do, to deliver the final glossy product we get to see. Along with her work, Bee also shares bits of her personal style - truly something to behold. If you're looking to get into the fashion industry, this is the page to follow. Keep an eye out for the informative Q and As she periodically posts about the styling business.
