This was once home to former Mayors and Millionaires in the city. Perched on the Observatory Ridge in Bez Valley, it was named after a place in Canada, where the first owner, Tommy Allen, came from. Allen later became Mayor of Joburg from 1917 to 1919. The house features marble floors, Burmese teak clad walls and the beautiful Art Deco fireplace fronted with Portuguese tiles. The house used to have the finest four stain-glass windows titled 'Commerce, Justice, Industry and Agriculture', which were manufactured in 1870 in England and housed in the first Stock Exchange. This costs R300 per person, which includes tea and welcome bubbly. Cradle of Humankind Cycle Tour - 19 May 2019 Ever been to the Cradle of Humankind? No? Well, now is your chance! This area has been dubbed as a World Heritage Site and is a must visit. The tour will start from The Thatch Cafe parking at the entrance to the Rhino and Lion Park in Kromdraai. You'll then ride to the old Kromdraai Gold Mine at IBIS Ridge Farm which is known as one of the first goldmines in the Witwatersrand, dating back to 1881. You'll then proceed to the Sterkfontein Caves, where you'll take a guided tour of the caves, dating back millions of years. You'll end your tour at Neck n Deck with lunch surrounded by wildlife. This costs R650 per person (includes all the tour fees, bike, helmet) and R550 per person if you bring your own bike. Tour of 1904 Northwards Mansion - 25 May 2019 Have you ever heard of the flamboyant couple, Colonel John Dale Lace, and his wife, Josephine Dale Lace (Jose in short)? Jose was the socialite in the early Joburg of the Randlords – the mining magnates of the early gold rush. Well, this couple’s prominent 52-room stunner of a house is open for a tour like no other. The curator will share plenty of intriguing stories about this mansion and its interesting owners. The house also has some stunning views from its perch on the Parktown Ridge. The tour takes between 3 – 4 hours, and is certainly not to be missed. northwards mansion
