It's A Disco Lunch At Katy's Palace Bar

Joburg Admin / March 9, 2022

Disco dominated the world for a decade in the 70s as a genre of music, and a subculture of fabulous fashion, hair, attitude and roller-skates. But then it simply faded into the shadows. However, there’s a whole lot of glittering truth in the saying that ‘you just can’t keep a good thing down’. And as the character Josh Neff aptly put it in the 1998 film The Last Days of Disco: “Disco was too great, and too much fun, to be gone forever! It's got to come back someday. I just hope it will be in our own lifetimes.” Well, Jozi, get ready to pull out your bell bottoms, polyester shirts, platform shoes, jumpsuits and halter dresses, because disco’s revival is kicking off in Katy’s Palace Bar. And with all you can eat sushi plus bottomless MCC and top DJs … it’s just the way, ah-ha ah-ha, we like it, ah-ha ah-ha. To find out more about The Disco Lunch and why disco is experiencing a reawakening, we chatted to events coordinator and all-round nice guy, Danny Figueiredo  Tell us a bit about yourself and how The Disco Lunch idea came about? I’m a guy that loves seeing people happy. My purpose in life was always entertaining people one way or another through music, festivals and crazy activations. So we started an event called Sunset Sundays at Katy’s Palace. Sunset Sundays has fast become one of the most beautiful events in South Africa. Every Sunday we have a capacity crowd for lunch with cool music that eventually turns into a party.  Historically we only play Deep House and Afro-tech at Sunset Sundays. But one day one of our DJs, Rikay played a disco set and the crowd went crazy. Seeing that, I knew then that disco needed its own lunch. disco lunch What made you choose disco as a theme for this event? The energy! I love the energy of disco. When you think of disco you think of bright colourful lights, smiles, dancing, roller skates and wild hairstyles. I just love seeing people laughing and dancing, so when I first noticed the energy the crowd gave off to the disco set at our Sunset Sundays event, I naturally saw that disco needs its own lunch and here we are, The Disco Lunch has been born. And I love it, love everything about it. The concept, the music, the food, the drinks, the venue, the artwork … everything! Is there really endless sushi and bubbles, and how does that work? Guests pay R350 as their entrance. This would then include endless sushi, MCC and mimosas from 2pm to 6pm. We will have dedicated stations at the venue on the day serving out as many servings of sushi, bubbles and mimosas as our guests can handle.  What makes Katy's Palace Bar so great for your event? Ah man, the venue is breath-taking. I still maintain it’s the most beautiful venue in Gauteng. High ceilings, face brick walls, vintage styled décor, rustic furniture and then to top it off, the magnificent view overlooking Sandton. Nothing can beat it.  Are guests encouraged to dress in disco threads for the event? Yes 1000% yes! Let’s get disco crazy! Best dressed group may win a little something-something on the night. We won’t give too much away about that right now. Tell us about the DJ line up and what we can expect from them? So, we’ve sourced only the coolest of cool disco DJs in all of the land. Mark Pilgrim will be headlining the day’s proceedings and he will be supported by Tashy D’Agrela, Royal K, Jevan Binder and Rikay all the way from Cape Town.  When Is It? Saturday, 2 April 2022 from 14:00 to 00:00 Where Is It? Katy's Palace Bar, 6 Desmond Street, Kramerville, Sandton, Johannesburg, 2090 How Much Is It?  Tickets cost R350 on per person on Howler and includes all you can eat sushi plus bottomless MCC and mimosas For more information For more information about The Disco Brunch, email [email protected], visit Facebook or call 082 823 2674 Written by Hayden Horner.
