The Guy's Guide To Choosing An Engagement Ring

Joburg Admin / May 6, 2016

Start Saving

Even before you think of taking a knee and asking one of the most important questions of your life, start putting cash aside. Engagement rings can become very pricey, very quickly. As with most expensive choices the outcome will be determined by your budget. This is step number one. Be prepared to fork out quite a bit for something so small.

Plan Ahead

At least three or four months in advance, get a conversation going and find out if she likes gold or silver or platinum or whatever. Some girls like diamonds, others prefer malachite – ask her how she feels about the diamond trade or something... just make it happen. Remember, you're not buying a rack of marinated ribs from the grocery store – you can't just flip a coin to make up your mind about lemon and herb or spicy barbecue, so do your research subtly. Just make sure you're not being conspicuous about the whole deal.

Steal Her Jewellery

This is one of the best tips we can give you, friend. The next time you're over at her place and she's taking a shower, sneak into her bedroom and take two or three of her rings from her jewellery box. This serves two purposes: to make sure you know what size ring to get her, and to give the jeweller an idea of what she likes.

Choose The Right Jeweller

This is important because the jeweller will have the goods on offer. Some are over-priced so keep an eye out for that. Shop around until you find one you feel is right. Don't shy on smaller, independent jewellers – they often offer the best prices as well as a more personal service.

Pay Attention To The Stones

When choosing a ring, take caution when it comes to bands blasted with small stones. These have a tendency to fall out after time. A stone which is held in place by a claw won't fall out – unless you pry it open with a crowbar or something. Whether your hopeful fiancée is into, be it calcite, copal or charcoal, the stone is what makes or break the thing. These differ in quality which directly impacts the price. Remember, diamonds aren't the only stones out there.

Opt For Soldering

This will save you a lot of money when it comes to buying a wedding ring. Ask the jeweller for a ring which can have extra bands soldered to, extending the engagement ring to a wedding ring if necessary. This will also lead to a better fit for her as bulkier rings are more comfortable to wear. On closing, keep in mind that an extravagant proposal needs to be fitted with an extravagant ring. Now, go and be free and remember, we always have your back. Show this to that buddy of yours you know will be taking the step towards union soon. greyethth By Shawn Greyling
