Greatest Moments in the Famous Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg

Joburg Admin / August 14, 2024

Ellis Park Stadium, the beating heart of Johannesburg, is a stadium of legendary status that has hosted some unforgettable moments since its opening in 1927. This belstadium, now known as Emirates Airline Park, has been a stage for iconic rugby matches, historic football games, and even monumental concerts.

The 1995 Rugby World Cup Final

Ellis Park's most famous moment undoubtedly came on June 24, 1995, during the Rugby World Cup Final. The Springboks faced off against New Zealand’s formidable All Blacks. In a gripping match that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Springboks emerged victorious with a 15-12 win in extra time.

This victory was more than just a sporting achievement; it was a significant event in post-apartheid South Africa, symbolising unity and national pride. Nelson Mandela, then President of South Africa, presenting the trophy to captain Francois Pienaar, is an image etched in the annals of history.

Tri-Nations Triumphs

Ellis Park has also been the venue for several Tri-Nations (now Rugby Championship) clashes. In 2000, the Springboks played a nail-biting match against Australia, triumphing 19-18 in one of the closest rugby results between these two powerhouses.

This match was particularly memorable for the incredible atmosphere created by the passionate home crowd, proving once again why Ellis Park is regarded as one of rugby's most intimidating venues for visiting teams.

Super Rugby Spectacles

The stadium is home to the Lions, one of South Africa's premier rugby franchises. Over the years, Ellis Park has hosted numerous memorable Super Rugby matches. In 2001, the Lions (then called the Cats) thrashed the Highlanders with an impressive 56-21 victory.

More recently, the 2017 Super Rugby final saw the Lions facing the Crusaders, though the home team fell short, the game added another chapter to the stadium's history.

Historic Football Matches

Rugby might be the regular feature in this iconic stadium, but football has also had its share of Ellis Park pie. There were several key matches hosted during 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, including the opening and the final matches.

This helped the stadium prepare for hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches such as five group stage matches, one round of 16 match, and one quarter-final. Notably, it hosted the thrilling match where the USA defeated Algeria 1-0 with a last-minute goal by Landon Donovan.

Concert in the Park (1985)

On January 12, 1985, Ellis Park Stadium hosted the “Concert in the Park,” a massive benefit event for Operation Hunger. The concert featured an impressive line-up of South African musicians, including Johnny Clegg, Juluka, and Hotline.

Attended by over 100,000 people, the event raised significant funds for combating malnutrition and hunger, showcasing the unifying power of music during a turbulent time in South Africa's history.

Conclusion

Ellis Park Stadium holds a special place in the hearts of Joburgers, rugby, music, and sports fans across the world. From the Springboks' iconic 1995 Rugby World Cup victory to the Concert in the Park, it has witnessed moments that transcend its original purpose as a rugby stadium.

As it continues to host new events, Ellis Park remains a beacon of Johannesburg's and South Africa's history and culture.
