Goodman Gallery: Where Art and Activism Converge

Joburg Admin / May 15, 2025

From its bold beginnings during apartheid to becoming a global cultural force, Goodman Gallery has remained fiercely committed to art that inspires dialogue, transformation, and hope. Whether you're an art aficionado or a curious traveller, this gallery is your gateway to the soul of modern creativity.

A Revolutionary Beginning

Goodman Gallery opened its doors in Johannesburg in 1966 with a revolutionary stance: to exhibit artists of all races at a time when apartheid ruled South Africa. It became one of the first in the world to showcase now-iconic 20th-century African artists. Over the decades, Goodman Gallery has evolved into a global nexus for critical thought and aesthetic brilliance, with locations in Johannesburg, Cape Town, London’s Mayfair, and a new viewing room in New York’s Upper East Side. Today, the gallery is helmed by Liza Essers, who has transformed it into a powerhouse. Its renowned curatorial initiatives—IN CONTEXT, South South, and Working Title—continue to expand the conversation on global art, identity, and place. These programmes spotlight emerging voices from the African diaspora while bridging dialogues between artists across the Global South.

The Artists: Visionaries Who Shape Culture

Goodman Gallery represents a constellation of talent from every corner of the world. From legendary South African figures like William Kentridge, Sam Nhlengethwa, and Sue Williamson, to the powerful legacies of David Goldblatt and David Koloane, the gallery keeps a strong tether to its origins while propelling contemporary voices into the spotlight. You’ll also find trailblazers like Kudzanai Chiurai, Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, Ghada Amer, Yinka Shonibare CBE RA, and El Anatsui, each offering distinct yet universally resonant narratives. The full list of artists and their works can be explored here.

More Than a Gallery: A Cultural Experience

Visiting the Johannesburg location is an immersive journey. The Sculpture Garden features stunning works by artists like William Kentridge, Hank Willis Thomas, and Edoardo Villa—each piece engaging you in quiet reflection or bold confrontation. Tucked away nearby is the Goodman Coffee Shop, a tranquil spot offering pastries, hot drinks, and a reference library that’s ideal for both caffeine-fueled study sessions and casual lounging. With free Wi-Fi and a curated bookshop, it’s the perfect extension of the gallery’s intellectual and artistic spirit.

Exhibitions That Speak to the Moment

Goodman Gallery’s exhibitions are dynamic and provocative, designed to challenge, enlighten, and engage. From solo showcases to powerful group installations, each exhibit is a curated dialogue about our world. Whether you're in Johannesburg, Cape Town, London, or exploring online, you can discover what’s currently on view here.

The Screening Room adds another dimension, offering visitors a space to watch films and video artworks that explore everything from history and memory to futurism and resistance. Dive into the current screenings here.

Art With Purpose: Social Responsibility

Goodman Gallery doesn’t stop at representation—it extends its impact through real-world change. From long-standing partnerships with NGOs like the Red Cross and Orange Babies Foundation to its latest initiative with Cheetah Plains Private Game Reserve, the gallery leads efforts in community development and environmental sustainability. Its 2023 solar-powered water project brought clean drinking water to KwaLangakazi Village for the first time, and in 2024, new projects continue this mission under the themes of community, conservation, and social impact.

Shop the Collection

Collectors and casual admirers alike can own a piece of this vision through the Goodman Gallery Shop. Featuring limited-edition prints, books, and selected artworks, it’s a gateway to bringing contemporary masterpieces into your personal space.
