There is nothing quite like the atmosphere, sound, and personal connection of a live gig. From Braamfontein to Bedfordview, Joburg’s music scene is vibing with local talent, diverse genres, and pumping venues.

There is no reason not to be involved with what Joburg has to offer. We at Joburg.co.za decided to put together some legendary live venues to help you on your way.

Braamfontein, known for its art, student vibe, and nightlife, is where you will find Untitled Basement/Artivist. This unique space is inhabited by artists, creatives, academics, music fans, foodies, and a strong sense of community. There is no stage; all the musos perform in the middle of the room. This way, they are visible to everyone. The music is cutting-edge and ranges from piano jazz to eclectic, and everything in between. Throughout March, the Untitled Basement will be presenting HER, a female-led (as band leaders and collaborators) live music series celebrating women.

The Radium Beer Hall is the oldest surviving bar and grill in Joburg, famous for its historic atmosphere, live jazz, and hearty food. Opened in 1929 as The Radium Tearoom, the venue hid its illicit beer trade behind the pretext of serving tea. In 1942, it became a fully-fledged beer hall, at first a men-only bar, before transforming into the open-hearted space it is today, where all are welcome.

With a history steeped in jazz, The Radium now blends its jazz heritage with modern rock, reggae, and indie performances.

With its constant flow of live performances and interesting history, The Radium Beer Hall is worth a visit. Ask Brad Pitt, he’s been there.

Open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Katzy’s Live in Rosebank is where adults go out to play. No under-25’s allowed, and the dress code is smart casual. The live band performances bring South African talent to the people. There is a cover charge of R200, but with regulars such as Jazz Company, Funk’d Up, and Dr Victor & The Rasta Rebels, it is worth every penny. With the award-winning Grillhouse sharing a kitchen, you are sure to enjoy an adult night out with fab food and fabber (is that a word?) music.

Something a little different because Joburg.co.za takes everyone’s tastes into consideration. The Linder Auditorium at WITS is renowned for its acoustic quality, and as such is home to the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO). Classical music lovers from all over Joburg gather at the Linder Auditorium to hear Mozart or Chopin, and many of the other great composers, performed by both home-grown and international musicians. The auditorium also hosts concerts and choir productions on a regular basis.
