What Is It?

Gertrude Stein and a Companion is a tender story about love, life and loss. Set in bohemian Paris, the play chronicles the extraordinary relationship between American modernist author and poet Gertrude Stein and her lifelong partner Alice B. Toklas. Both Stein and Toklas refused to bow to societal standards of gender and sexuality, preferring to carve their own paths. Their circle of friends was nothing to snicker at either, including the likes of Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald and Picasso. Immerse yourself in the ambiance of early 20th century Paris, and in the complex relationship between Stein and Toklas. Director Chris Weare masterfully directs his actresses, delivering a sensitive story with tact and utmost respect. Whether you are celebrating Joburg Pride, or are simply in search of a cleverly written play, Gertrude Stein and a Companion is a must-see.
