Gerakaris Family Wines can be found on Marlborough Avenue in Craighall Park, Johannesburg. Gerakaris Family Wines began in a garage, and has worked its way up to being one of the city's must-visit hidden gems. Owner, Kath Gerakaris, who has a postgraduate diploma in viticulture and winemaking, had been making wine in her garage in Joburg for a few years before she found the perfect home for her new venture.
The Wine Tastings Are A Must
Gerakaris Family Wines is a lovely spot for those looking to pop in and enjoy an intimate wine tasting. Here, you can sample their wines and perhaps even find a new favourite. Their five wines are presented in a relaxed bespoke manner at R100 per person. Booking is essential for more than two people, so keep that in mind when planning a visit over the weekend.
Sip and savour tastings of the five wines that they make within their beautiful gardens or in the winery if the weather doesn't play along. Gerakaris wine tastings are a lovely experience if you have a fondness for wine. And if you're feeling a tad peckish, they also serve a cheese board designed to match the wines being tasted, which showcases four South African cheese producers, and bowls of Cape Olives.
And when it comes to cost per tasting, you can expect to pay R30 to taste each of the five wines on offer at Gerakaris Family Wines.
Tasting Hours:
- Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: 12:30 – 17:00
- Saturday: 11:00 – 16:00
- Sunday: 11:00 – 14:00
You Can Buy Your New Favourites & Take Them Home
Sample and enjoy the wines, find your new favourite and take it home with you! You can buy their wines from their on-site wine shop. Any Gerakaris wine that you decide to purchase can be bought immediately. These include:
- Ellaki (un-wooded Chenin blanc) – R120 per bottle
- Elli (wooded Chenin blanc) – R220 per bottle
- Tom (Syrah) – R180 per bottle
- Thomas (Syrah) – R280 per bottle
The wooded Elli is a wonderful "textured wine” that marries beautifully with food, while the Ellaki is lighter and easier to drink on its own as an apéritif. The Tom is a fruit-driven Syrah (Shiraz), while the Thomas is more serious, more complex and aromatic.
