What Is It?

Gardens of the Golden City is a Non-Profit Organisation which was founded in 1997. For the past 14 years, this society of garden lovers has been bringing you the very best private gardens to explore. This year's festival showcases six feature gardens, carefully curated and pruned by proud volunteers. In partnership with Open Gardens South Africa, the Gardens of the Golden City event is set to be bigger and better than ever. Between October and November 2019, the six featured gardens will be on show. Visit one or visit them all! Just remember to take in the natural beauty, smell the roses and enjoy the outdoors.

Gordon Harrison

After 17 years of trying and not succeeding with different garden styles, they have embraced their steep, south facing slope, heaps of rock, heavy winter frost and a limited budget. Less formal, more indigenous and natural, is their new approach. Please join them and be part of their gardening journey on Saturday, 14 March 2020 and Sunday, 15 March 2020.

Jane McKenzie As you wander through Jane’s beautiful, indigenous garden in the heart of Bryanston, you can experience a sense of peace and tranquillity created by the canopy of trees which she planted 25 years ago. Come explore many paths leading from the house take one on a journey of discovery to different sections of the garden where a variety of indigenous plants such as plectranthus and aloes cover the banks, and agapanthus bloom on Saturday, 14 March 2020 and Sunday, 15 March 2020. Aloe Ridge Aloe Ridge a 6700 m indigenous garden is set in the Northriding Agricultural Holdings Valley just below the Northgate Dome. There are over 300 planted South African indigenous tree species growing amongst the original ancient African Olives, Mountain Karee, Bushman’s Poison, Common Hook Thorn, Red leaf Rock Fig and many more. Taking place on the Saturday, 18 April 2020 and Sunday, 19 April 2020. Shepstone Garden Mountain View Joburg’s Shepstone Gardens are a mix of verdant and intriguing concealed spaces. They are theatrical gardens filled with hidden treasures. The owner took inspiration from 18th century English gardens, especially in terms of the views and different levels. It is about a sense of theatre, about not divulging everything at first glance. A meander along the gently curving pathway reveals constant notes of surprise. Happening on Saturday, 04 July 2020 and Sunday, 05 July.
