Everard Read

Kicking off the tour on Jellicoe Avenue is the Everard Read Gallery. Africa's oldest commercial art gallery, the Everard Read celebrated its centenary year in 2013. A truly Pan-African artist hub, this gallery features some of Africa's finest modern and contemporary artists. However, they also source fine art from across the world. The Everard Read building itself is also a celebrated icon of South African post-modern design. Developed in the late 1970s, it is one of Rosebank's many architectural masterpieces. Be sure to bring your camera along. Details: 2 Jellicoe Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg | 011 788 4805 | [email protected]

Circa On Jellicoe

Right opposite the Everard Read is Circa on Jellicoe. Undoubtedly one of the finest contributions to recent architecture, this dome-shaped building beckons visitors with its gleam and prestigious exterior. Built in 2009 as an extension of the Everard Read Gallery, Circa displays an intersperse of contemporary art exhibitions with human technology and scientific installations. With its subtle curved walls, this is the perfect place to exhibit interactive art. Hop right on over from the ER building to experience a whole new take on modern art and design. Keyes Arts Mile

Just a hop and a skip away from the Circa building is Joburg's famous Keyes Arts Mile! An assemblage of galleries, designs stores and fine restaurants, this mixed-use precinct is a must-visit. Hosting regular art talks and workshops, this is a dedicated artist's hub. Stop by here for the finest fresh produce, a yummy burger and milkshake or simply to take in the beauty of the artistic surrounds. Follow them on Facebook to see upcoming events and exhibitions. TMRW Gallery

At the end of the Arts Mile, you will come across the Trumpet on Keyes Building. An art and design centre, this is a hot spot for new age ideas. The centre houses two galleries, the first being the TMRW Gallery. Blending the seemingly incongruous worlds of art, technology and augmented reality, the TMRW Gallery presents art right at the cutting edge. If you are looking for a gallery experience unlike any other, then add this art centre to your list. Be prepared to see art in a whole new light. SMAC Gallery

The second Trumpet on Keyes resident is the SMAC Gallery. First established in Stellenbosch, the gallery opened its doors in Rosebank in 2016. Representing a number of established South African and international artists, including Willem Boshoff, Jody Paulsen and Musa N. Nxumalo, the SMAC Gallery regularly presents large-scale historical exhibitions and projects. Offering a critical re-evaluation of South African art history within a global dialogue, this is the perfect place to round off your first leg of the Jan Smuts art row. Goodman Gallery

From Keyes Avenue, head back onto Jan Smuts. Between a strip of upmarket restaurants, bars and businesses, you will find the Goodman Gallery. It's almost impossible to miss it, with its stark white walls and unique design, the building stands out from the busy main road. Some of the biggest names in South African art have their work represented here, including William Kentridge, Sam Nhlengethwa, Sue Williamson and David Goldblatt. The Goodman Gallery prides itself on being a springboard for many of these artists' careers, and consequently, their contributions to social and political emancipation. Don't skip past this exceptional art house. Details: 163 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, Johannesburg | 011 788 1113 | [email protected]

David Krut Projects

David Krut Projects is an alternative arts institution dedicated to promoting careers in the arts. Their Parkwood gallery features an adjacent bookstore, which stocks some of the most diverse material on art, design, fashion and film in Johannesburg. If you have any interest in printmaking, lithography, design or collage, visit the David Krut gallery and bookstore. They work in close collaboration with printmakers and artists such as William Kentridge too. Visit them for a learning experience, visual feast and the chance to mingle with high-profile art makers. Gallery MOMO

Further along Jan Smuts, you will come across Gallery MOMO, a contemporary exhibition space rooted in Pan-African and Diasporic art forms. Representing fine artists, sculptors, portrait artists and installation artists, this gallery offers a wide array of forms to marvel over. The artwork exhibited here has a distinct South-Africaness about it. Often featuring scenes of everyday people, living their everyday lives, these pieces reflect our society in a subtle, but outstanding way. Come through to feel a sense of connection with the city and its people. Details: 52 7th Avenue, Parktown North, Johannesburg | 011 327 3247 | [email protected] gallery

Exhibiting South Africa's pre-eminent performance and visual artists, the Stevenson is the home of weird and wonderful art. Representing the likes of Penny Siopis, Steven Cohen, Zanele Muholi and Portia Zvavahera, you can't go wrong with this modern art house. Make this last stop count by taking as many photographs as you can, of yourself, and the art.
