Five Sober and Healthy Hobbies to Take Up in Joburg

Joburg Admin / October 14, 2024

We live in a world where much of the socialising we do tends to revolve around bars and alcohol, which isn’t exactly ideal if you don’t drink.

More and more of us are snubbing alcohol, whether as a result of addiction intervention and treatment or just making a conscious decision to give it up or never touch the stuff in the first place.

Let’s face it, it’s a relatively unhealthy hobby too, particularly when around Johannesburg there are so many healthier alternatives too. So, if you’re giving up the pub with friends, here’s a little inspiration to enjoy some healthier alternatives…

Hiking in the Magaliesberg Mountains

Hiking has long been a popular activity for people in the city and Joburg is blessed with being surrounded by stunning landscapes.

The Magaliesberg mountain range is ideal for all levels of hiker, so whether you’re a beginner looking for a gentle stroll or looking for a more challenging climb or trail, there’s something for you.

It’s a great opportunity to connect with nature as well as get some exercise, with hiking shown to reduce stress, improve cardiovascular health and boost our moods. A sharp contrast from a few beers!

What’s more, there are plenty of hiking groups in and around the city to join, perfect for joining with friends or making some new ones.

Cycling the Braamfontein Spruit Trail

If cycling is more your thing, the Braamfontein Spruit Trail provides a 37-km route that runs through a variety of green spaces and parks in the city. It’s a brilliant, accessible route that allows you to take in the city’s natural beauty as well as escape the hustle and bustle of it.

Again, cycling is a really good workout and will improve both endurance and muscle strength. Ideal for people of all ages and abilities due to the low-impact nature of cycling, it’s really useful for enjoying some fresh air, boosting mood and keeping away from the pub.

Yoga in the Park

For a calming yet physically engaging activity, yoga is an ideal hobby. The physical postures and stretches improve strength, flexibility, and balance, while the breathing exercises and meditation practices can help reduce stress and promote mental clarity. Many yoga studios in Johannesburg offer classes, but outdoor yoga, particularly in one of the city's lush parks, adds another level of tranquillity.

Emmarentia Dam, Delta Park, and Zoo Lake are some popular spots for outdoor yoga sessions, often organised by local instructors or community groups. Practising yoga in a natural environment enhances the benefits of mindfulness and helps to reconnect with the present moment. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced yogi, yoga is a versatile and inclusive practice that supports both physical health and emotional wellbeing, offering a natural high without the need for alcohol.

Gardening and Urban Farming

If you're looking for a hobby that is both therapeutic and rewarding, gardening is a great option. In Johannesburg, urban farming has become increasingly popular, with more people turning their backyards, balconies, and even windowsills into spaces for growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The city also has several community gardens, like the Bertrams Inner City Farm, where people can rent plots and get involved in urban agriculture.

Gardening is a mindful activity that encourages patience and care, while also allowing you to reap the benefits of your labour. Studies show that tending to plants can lower stress, increase happiness, and promote a sense of purpose. Plus, growing your own produce encourages a healthy lifestyle by incorporating fresh, home-grown food into your diet. Urban farming also builds a sense of community, as many initiatives are collaborative, allowing you to connect with others while learning about sustainable living.

Pottery Classes

For those looking to tap into their creative side, pottery is a deeply satisfying and calming hobby. Pottery studios across Johannesburg, such as the Pottery Studio in Fourways or Earth Play in Norwood, offer classes for all skill levels. Working with clay is a tactile, meditative process that requires focus and patience. Shaping clay into beautiful, functional pieces can be a wonderful outlet for self-expression and a way to unwind after a busy day.

The act of creating something with your hands can be incredibly therapeutic, helping to reduce anxiety and improve focus. Pottery also offers a break from technology, encouraging you to slow down and enjoy the moment. Whether you’re crafting simple bowls or intricate sculptures, pottery is an enriching and sober hobby that promotes both creativity and mindfulness.
