What Is It?
The Goethe-Institut remastered Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s immersive epic,
Berlin Alexanderplatz in 2007. The controversial fifteen-hour film follows the hulking, childlike ex-convict Franz Biberkopf (Günter Lamprecht). Amid the corrosive urban landscape of 1920s Weimar-era Germany, he attempts to "become an honest soul". With equal parts cynicism and humanity, Fassbinder's epic details a mammoth portrait of a common man struggle to survive. The 14-part miniseries was originally broadcast in 1980. Watch it over the coming months at The Goethe-Institut South Africa's monthly film screening events.
Berlin Alexanderplatz is in German with English subtitles. Entrance to the screening is free, with drinks and snacks being served.
