Feel the Excitement: The 2024 Varsity Cup is Here

Joburg Admin / February 12, 2024

When it comes to the vibrant landscape of South African sports, few competitions capture the essence of passion, skill, and rivalry quite like the Varsity Cup. Since its inception, this rugby tournament has become a cornerstone of university sports culture, showcasing the country's top young talents and fostering a sense of pride among participants and supporters alike.

Origins of FNB Varsity Cup

The roots of the Varsity Cup can be traced back to 2008 when it was established as a platform to elevate the standard of rugby played at university level in South Africa. Inspired by similar tournaments worldwide, the founders aimed to create a competitive environment where student-athletes could thrive both academically and athletically. The organisation is passionate about keeping the spirit of sports alive and providing opportunities for young athletes to perform at their best.

The 2024 Varsity Cup season will run from 19 February 2024 and 22 April 2024.

Varsity Cup Format and Structure

Over the course of two exciting months, campuses across South Africa will pulse with the electrifying energy of the 17th edition of the nation's top student rugby competition every Monday night.

One of the defining features of the Varsity Cup is its innovative format, which sets it apart from traditional rugby competitions. After seven round-robin stages of the tournament, the top four sides on the log will advance to the semi-finals. The final will be played on Monday, 22 April 2024.

In 2023, for the first time ever, women's rugby formed part of the competition.

Which universities will be representing the province? The FNB Wits team, representing the University of Witwatersrand and FNB UJ representing, University of Johannesburg (UJ). These teams consistently bring a high level of skill and determination to the tournament.

With a rich history of producing top-tier rugby players, Gauteng's Varsity Cup teams boast strong coaching staff, dedicated players, and a passionate fan base. Their presence in the competition adds an extra layer of intensity to matches, as they vie for glory and uphold the proud tradition of rugby excellence in Gauteng.

Famous Rivalries

Over the years, the Varsity Cup has given rise to intense rivalries between participating universities, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competition. Matches between perennial contenders such as the University of Pretoria (FNB UP Tuks), (who will be playing in the Varsity Shield Cup this year) and University of Cape Town (FNB UCT IKEYS), and Stellenbosch University (FNB Maties) are eagerly anticipated and draw large crowds of passionate supporters. These rivalries have become ingrained in the fabric of South African rugby culture, fostering a sense of camaraderie and pride among students, alumni, and fans.
