Explore Joburg's Best Art Galleries In Level 3 Lockdown

Joburg Admin / June 24, 2020

Goodman Gallery

The Goodman Gallery is one of Joburg's most well known and recognisable art galleries. Situated along the Jan Smuts Art Mile, this contemporary African gallery hosts some of the country's greatest artists and thinkers at its events and exhibitions. Under level 3 lockdown regulations, the gallery will be open to the public by appointment only on weekdays from 09:00 - 17:00 and on weekends from 09:00 - 16:00. Book yourself a slot on the gallery's website or contact them via email at [email protected].  Address: 163 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, Johannesburg.

Stevenson Gallery

If it's cutting-edge contemporary artistry you're after, look no further than the Stevenson Gallery. With spaces located in Parktown North, Cape Town and Amsterdam, this art house brings together local artists with the best curators from across the world. In level lockdown, the Stevenson's Johannesburg space is open to the public via appointment only. Email them on [email protected] to schedule a visit between 09:00 - 17:00 on Monday to Friday or between 10:00 - 13:00 on Saturdays. Address: 46 7th Avenue, Parktown North, Johannesburg. Everard Read Gallery

The Everard Read Gallery is Africa's oldest commercial art gallery. Situated along Keyes Arts Mile in Rosebank, it welcomes thousands of visitors a year to exhibitions, events and workshops. However in level 3 lockdown, operations at the gallery and its adjoining venues at the spectacular CIRCA building will be somewhat different. You will now have to book your visit to the gallery via email to ensure that all health and safety protocols may be prepared before your arrival. The gallery is now open on weekdays between 09:00 - 16:00. You can also call them on 011 788 4805 to consult with a curator or artist from your home. Address: 2 and 6 Jellicoe Avenue, Rosebank, Johannesburg.

Melrose Gallery

The Melrose Gallery is one of our favourite art galleries in the city. Here you will find an unexpected display of modern Pan-African art and sculpture from the likes of Dr Willie Bester, Dr Esther Mahlangu and Pitika Ntuli. Pop by on your way through the Melrose Arch Precinct for a good dose of arts and culture. The Melrose Gallery is open in level 3 lockdown on Monday to Saturday between 09:00 - 18:00 and on Sundays between 09:00 - 16:00. Address: 10 High Street, Melrose Arch, Johannesburg. Victoria Yards Artist Studios

While not strictly an art gallery, Victoria Yards certainly offers a diverse array of fine art, sculpture, crafts and bespoke design from their on-site artists. Make a trip to visit their artist studios and stores in level 3 lockdown to find your next custom art or furniture piece. Foakes Coffee is also open, so you can grab a cuppa along your way through the Yards. You needn't make an appointment, but you must comply with COVID-19 health and safety precautions at all times. Address: 16 Viljoen Street, Lorentzville, Johannesburg. Not quite ready to venture out into the city? Check out these virtual art exhibitions being hosted by Joburg's top art galleries.
