Exhibition Opening: 'Faces and Phases 13' by Zanele Muholi

What Is It?

Zanele Muholi's 'Faces and Phases' was born in 2006, 10 years after homosexuality was decriminalised in the South African constitution and just a few months before same sex marriage was legalised by the High Court. The project started out with just one portrait of Busi Sigasa, which was captured at the iconic Constitution Hill in Braamfontein. Since they captured that first black and white image, Zanele Muholi has photographed over 500 black lesbians, gender-nonconforming individuals and transmen. 'Faces and Phases' is now 13 years old, entering its adolescence as a living archive of Africa's LGBTQIA+ community. As an activist project, Muholi's 'Faces and Phases 13' advocates for the eradication of hate crimes against members of the LGBTQIA+ communities in Africa. It lobbies for inclusion and non-discrimination for LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals throughout all spheres of society. 'Faces and Phases 13' is ultimately a recognition of black queer visibility. Not only does it celebrate these identities, but it stands in defiance against the erasure of their histories on the continent. Visit the Stevenson Gallery in Parktown North to see 'Faces and Phases' commemorate 13 years of activism and pride. Muholi will also host a series of workshops and discussions at the Market Photo Workshop on Friday, 19 July and Monday, 22 July 2019. Find more information about this here.
