The Sixth Annual European Film Festival

The European Film Festival celebrates its sixth year of cinematic excellence this November. It is hosted simultaneously in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town by participating Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau venues. 12 participating countries will take part in the festival this year, debuting one new film each. Come and see the very best cinema on offer by Europe's key players in cinema. Filmmakers from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom will debut their films at this year's festival. All award-winning films, some of these new titles will represent their countries at next year’s Academy Awards. The European Film Festival 2019 is a partnership project, fostered by the European Union’s Delegation to South Africa and twelve European Member State embassies based in the country. They are the General Representation of the Government of Flanders, the French Institute in South Africa, the Goethe-Institut, the Italian Cultural Institute, the British Council and the Embassies of Austria, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. The project is organised in cooperation with Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau and Cineuropa and is coordinated by Creative WorkZone.

Here are our top picks to see at the upcoming festival:

Official Secrets (UK)

South African director, Gavin Hood (the mastermind behind Tsotsi, X-Man Origins – Wolverine, Eye in the Sky, Ender’s Game, Rendition, In Desert and Wilderness and A Reasonable Man) spearheads this political drama. Starring Keira Knightley as Katharine Gun, a British intelligence specialist who risked her life to prevent an illegal war between the UK, the USA and Iraq in 2003. The film also stars British cinema veteran, Ralph Fiennes. See it at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank on Sunday, 01 December 2019 at 18:00 or on Friday, 06 December 2019 at 20:30. Cold War (Poland)

If you are a fan of the Expressionist, black and white medium, then Polish director, Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War is a must-see for you. A romantic drama that takes place in Post-war Poland, Cold War won three Oscar-nominations at the 2019 Academy Awards. A true masterpiece of auteur cinema, this film features a stunning score. Combined with its fatefully mismatched characters, Cold War tells the tale of an impossible love story in impossible times. See it at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank on Sunday, 01 December 2019 at 16:00 and Thursday, 05 December 2019 at 20:00.  [embed]https://youtu.be/dUqL-j59sb8[/embed]

My Extraordinary Summer With Tess (Netherlands)

What's better than a coming of age story? The Netherlands' submission for the European Film Festival 2019 follows a boy and a girl on their paths of self-discovery, as they cross the threshold from childhood to adolescence, directed by international Emmy Kids Award-winning director, Steven Wouterlood. Afraid of being left alone as the youngest of the family, Sam (10) begins his own 'aloneness' training during his holiday on the Dutch island, Terschelling. But by meeting the elusive Tess, who carries a big secret, he is drawn into an adventure that makes him realize how important family really is. This film has won multiple awards, including the Grand Prize at the New York International Children’s Film Festival 2019. See it at Cinema Nouveau Rosebank on Sunday, 01 December 2019 at 14:00 or on Saturday, 07 December 2019 at 16:00. [embed]https://youtu.be/EBuI7kjvVDE[/embed]
